Each section begins with a large contour drawing of upper and lowercase letters suitable for copying. The sans-serif, gothic letters are easy to read but the capital "I" and the lowercase "L" may confuse children since they look identical. Simple words highlighting the featured letter are interspersed along the borders, while alliterative poems showcase the letter sounds. One quibble: girls usuallly fill passive, weak, or cowardly roles in these rhymes. While Julius "jogged" and Lyle "lugged," Sue "scurried away" and Isabelle "slipped" and cried. Plenty of cheery, playful black-and-white drawings reinforce the text and clarify simple craft instructions. A useful book for parents and teachers.?Paula A. Kiely, Milwaukee Public Library, WI

Educational and fun for children ages two to six, Alphabet Art provides fun while inspiring alphabet memorization. There are over 80 creative ways to learn the ABC's throughout the book, including making an alphabet zoo, playing ABC games, going on letter hunts, participating in finger plays, and reading rebus (picture) sentences. Art materials are also introduced to create "texturized" letters and animals. The author's experiences as an art teacher and love of creative learning are obvious. From Allan the Alligator to Zelda the Zebra, kids will enjoy the learning process through interactive play. The reinforcement of letter familiarity is achieved by offering several types of games with the same letter as their focus. This book would be a welcome addition to any home or school library. Children will be entertained and inspired to learn as a direct result of the games and art projects presented in this book. Hours of educational entertainment can be found by employing some of the creative techniques and games listed here. -- From Independent Publisher

What A Neat Book!

This is an incredibly fun book for both toddlers and preschoolers to help them learn their ABC's! Not only does it have really fun crafts to construct the letters of the alphabet, but it also incorporates objects that begin with those letters. So if you want to make the letter B, draw the letter and cut it out of a paper plate, then cut out a bubble envelope in the same shape and glue it on. That way the child can make the association between B and "b"ubble. There's also a second activity they can do for every letter, so in the case of "B" they also get to make a butterfly, something both my kids are really taken with.

The activities included in the book use very simple tools you won't necessarily have to go out of your want to hunt for. For example: a paper muffin cup, cardboard, construction paper, aluminum foil, tape, crayon, maker, scissors, etc, and the crafts are super cute! This book is a great testament to keeping learning fun!

About the Author
Feder obtained his B.A. in anthropology in 1973 from the State University of New York at Stonybrook. He obtained his M.A. in anthropology in 1975 from the University of Connecticut and his Ph.D. from the same institution in 1982. He has taught in the Department of Anthropology at Central Connecticut State University since 1977 where he is now a full professor. His primary research interests include the archaeology of the native peoples of New England and the analysis of public perceptions about the human past. He is the founder and director of the Farmington River Archaeological Project, a long-term investigation of the prehistory of the Farmington River Valley. He is the author and co-author of several books including: Human Antiquity: An Introduction to Physical Anthropology and Archaeology (with Michael Park; now in its fifth edition; McGraw-Hill); Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology (about to appear in its seventh edition; McGraw-Hill); The Past In Perspective: An Introduction to Human Prehistory (about to appear in its fifth edition; Oxford University Press); and Linking to the Past: A Brief Introduction to Archaeology (now in its second edition; Oxford University Press). Finally, he is the author of A Village of Outcasts: Historical Archaeology and Documentary Research at the Lighthouse Site (Mayfield Publishing). When he's not digging in the dirt or writing books, he likes to hang out with his one wife, two kids, and four very bad cats.

Excellent Supplemental Text on Pseudo Archaeology

Now in its tenth edition, Feder's book lays out clearly the world of pseudo archaeology for students who are interested in archaeology and were originally seduced into learning about the science by reading or watching television specials about the many frauds and myths of history. Countering the false knowledge possessed by students is a daunting task and Feder probably disappointed many of his students by revealing the falsity of myths such as Atlantis by using the scientific method rather than the fantasies and wishful thinking of many of the proponents of alternate histories. Not that this very readable book will shed any light on the muddled thinking of the fans of pseudoscience. But it will undoubtedly educate young learners whose minds have not been frozen by the fake history too common in the mass media.
If there is one failure of Feder's book it is that it is too short. Archaeology is filled with other examples of bad science, both by pseudoscientists and real scientists, that could easily extend this book by another 200 pages. Highly recommended.

A word on Atlantis

In regards to the many reviews that reference Atlantis as possibly being a real place from some distant past here are a few thoughts. The view that Atlantis existed is purely an Anglo ethnocentric fallacy. Here are some reasons why. First, most of the people who claim that Atlantis existed cannot read the ancient Hellenic language of Attica. If they could, it would be clear to the reader that what Plato wrote when he referenced Atlantis is a description of an ideal city and not a real city. Nothing beats reading the original text. This includes, Santorini or its ancient name of Thera as a possible source for Atlantis. Second, nowhere in any other text in the ancient Hellenic language through the Roman Latin is Atlantis written about as a real place. Third, we find no ancient art, paintings, mosaic, etc.. depicting Atlantis. Fourth, we know most of the ancient, and most important, mythologies of the Hellenic people. Again, you will find not even one reference to a place like Atlantis. So, tell me. If Atlantis was a real city, with the reputation it has today, why do we not find physical evidence for it in the culture of ancient Hellenic society? One last note I want to make. If you visit Greece today and ask anyone about Atlantis get ready to get laughed at for believing such a ridicules story. People who claim that Atlantis is real claim Dr. Feder has some agenda. I do not think anyone really cares if Atlantis is real or not. There is no money to be won in some contest. If we found any evidence to the contra then Archeologist would be more than pleased to accept it. The fact is that they have not found any. Anyone who does believe Atlantis is real can only claim its name to be true. No other information exists about the place. No one knows what the culture was like, what the people eat, songs they song, etc.... So, I ask again what purpose does it serves to believe in Atlantis? Even more to the point, what purpose are you trying to achieve by attacking Feder on this topic? Is it possible that you may have some hidden agenda?

Excellent book; Kindle edition overpriced

I listened to Dr. Feder on the Monster Talk podcast and found him so engaging that I decided to purchase this book. It turned out to be a worthwhile purchase.

The book is intended to be a textbook but don't be put off by that. The book reads quite well; Feder is as good a writer as he is a speaker. His prose is quite accessible with many pop culture references like comparing Neanderthals to the cavemen in Geico commercials and comparing Plato's Atlantis story to Star Wars. It is also an interesting way to teach archeology (although anthropology and paleontology are also touched on extensively), contrasting bad, psuedo-archeology with the real deal. It entertains while teaching. I'm convinced that Feder is very popular at Central Connecticut State.

The title is quite accurate; frauds (Cardiff giant, Piltdown man), myths (Atlantis, ancient astronauts), and mysteries (Moundbuilders, pre-Columbian America) are covered in many chapters. Most of the subjects were familiar to me except for the Moundbuilders but Feder had entertaining and original takes on all subjects.

I purchased what Amazon describes as a "print replica, Kindle edition". This means you can't read it on a traditional Kindle only on a Kindle application for a PC or iPad or other tablet. Fortunately, I have an iPad and read it on that. The book is formatted something like a pdf file. The book read fine when expanded to eliminate margins but it is tedious to do so repeatedly for every page. Anyone know if Kindle for iPad can preserve sizing from page to page? If so, I couldn't figure it out.

Highly recommended if one can afford the textbook pricing. It's come down since I purchased it but it is still somewhat high for mass market appeal.

About the Author
Joshua M. Greene has produced films for PBS and Disney, has served as vice president for New York’s largest PR firm, and was appointed director of strategic planning for the United Nations Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. He was also an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in New York. His previous works include the best-selling Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison; Justice at Dachau: The Trials of an American Prosecutor; Witness: Voices from the Holocaust; and Gita Wisdom: An Introduction to India’s Essential Yoga Text. In 1970, he was initiated as Yogesvara Das by Bhakivedanta Swami Prabhupada and served for thirteen years in Prabhupada’s society as director of French-language publications.

While visiting the United States, the Beatles heard a broadcast of the Kallman record on radio. Of the four superstars, George Harrison was most taken by the sound. He asked the band’s road manager to order copies of the album, and back in London Harrison distributed them to friends.

That year, interest in the Hare Krishna chant expanded in a variety of ways. On his posthumous album, titled Om, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and fellow musicians opened and closed the improvised tracks by quoting Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita: “Rites that the Vedas ordain and the rituals taught by the scriptures, the oblation, the flame into which they are offered—all these am I.” That was also the year Jimi Hendrix released his album Axis: Bold as Love, with his own face superimposed over the image of Krishna’s Universal Form. Soon after, Allen Ginsberg appeared on William F. Buckley’s television talk show Firing Line and sang the Hare Krishna mantra to a nationwide viewing audience. Not long after that, folksinger Tom Paxton referred to the Hare Krishna chant in his song “Talking Vietnam Potluck Blues”: “So we all lit up and by and by / The whole platoon was flyin’ high / With a beautiful smile on the Captain’s face / He smelled like midnight on St. Mark’s Place / Cleanin’ his weapon / Chantin’ sumpin’ about Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.” Author Tom Wolfe added to the momentum by including a description of the mantra in his book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

Before coming to America, had the Swami imagined what success would look like, he might not have foreseen such assimilation of the maha-mantra into pop culture. If he had been told, he would not have objected. “Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to cover his ears, pretending to not want to hear the chanting, as a way of tempting children to chant Hare Krishna,” he recalled. “However it is done, the chanting is potent and it will act.”

Through a combination of karmic good fortune, divine plan, jazz albums, pop songs and talk shows, the Hare Krishna mantra was spreading and the Swami’s following grew.

Superb biography of an inspiring personality

This is an exceptionally well-written biography written by Joshua Greene with fluency, depth of feeling for his subject, and with the realization born of four decades of practising the age-old spiritual teachings and practices taught by the Swami. The book is big, but so interestingly written that the reader eagerly plows through the pages. I love reading biographies of great leaders through the ages and the one whose story is told in this book (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada) comes across as very spiritually evolved, very compassionate, down to earth, and selfless.

I am really glad I bought this book and read it. It touched my heart, stimulated my intellect, and has made me want to check out the Swami's teachings in more detail. Highly recommend it.

Thrilling, riveting, illuminating, hard to put down

I was a little skeptical going into this, since I have read most of the biographies of Prabhupada already out there. To try to make a one volume work seemed to me not worth it.

I must commend the author for doing a fantastic job. I learned new things about this amazing swami's life. The book weaves a very compelling and informative narrative.

There were a few problems I had. Using a term like Hindu misogyny is not accurate at all. There is no fear of women in Vedic culture. Degraded practices may be present in the modern age, but those are not rooted in the original culture, which gives so much stress to protecting women.

Also, neither the swami nor the Vedas put forward the flat earth theory. Recorded conversations from Prabhupada make the point quite clear; that the planets are round.

It would have been nice if the author included the story of Prabhupada meeting someone who advised him to sell books instead of magazines, as that was a major turning point in the publication effort prior to the travel to the US.

All in all, a great book that is suited for all audiences.

A rich & deep introduction to Jung

I first read this wonderful book some 30-odd years ago, and I've returned to it many times since. It remains one of the best introductions to Jung's thought & basic concepts that I know. Singer's personal touch, both in her own case histories & her autobiographical anecdotes, add to the book; the feeling is one of listening to a wise woman, rather than hearing a dry lecture. Singer not only knows her material intellectually, she knows it in her soul, and that comes through on every page. This book made me start paying attention to my dreams, and gave me a much-needed framework for understanding my life at a crucial time, when I was most in need of such a framework.

While the revised & updated edition is excellent, I'd also recommend reading the original 1972 edition if you can find it. For example, Singer's chapter on Jung & the Counterculture is superb, and not nearly as dated as the author herself believed; in any case, it provides a valuable on-the-spot account of Jungian thought & its intersection with the 1960s, the impact of which is still being felt today. Yet it's also fascinating to read the follow-up stories of some of her patients in the newer edition.

Jung is a much better known name today than when this book first appeared, but his thought isn't always as well understood as it might be. Let Singer take you on a revelatory tour of the Psyche & learn far more about both Jung & yourself than you ever imagined. Highly recommended!

A 1st step in reading about Jung before reading Jung

A wonderful accessible book written in warmth and sincerity and utilizing real case examples throughout in furthering understanding the applicability of Jung whose impact remains paramount.
Obviously a well studied book by Jungian practicioners,this books appeal is it's lucid prose and style,never dry, written by a then leading Jungian therapist carefully in tune with her then radical climate of the day.
The book remains contemporary and not dated with time especially since the revised edition was written in 1994 and changed where she deemed appropriate.
The major concepts of Jung are explained here through case studies in addition to great insights, such as her take on the understanding of Plato as distinct from Aristotle and the fusion that Jung accomplished between Adler and Freud with his development of his Personality Theory.
A very useful,enjoyable and needed book allowing one to enjoy the appetizer with all the historical background and theories dealt with prior to relishing Jung's actual text.

About the Author
Irving Stone was born in San Francisco on July 14, 1903. He wrote several books in a genre that he coined the “biographical novel,” which recounted the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. He also wrote biographies of Clarence Darrow and Earl Warren, and short biographies of men who lost presidential elections. He died on August 26, 1989.

What makes this edition special is that its the only one I know of that has photos of most of Michaelangelo's artwork that are described in the book.
This edition is a nice, full hefty book, and comes in a thin cardboard box-cover. Nice esp for people who love the book. Since it's 1963 it won't be sleek & new, but I covered mine in a nice heavy plastic and that makes it sleek.
My complaint is with the reproductions being occasionally not as clear as they could be- some of the black-and-whites are too dark.
But there is no other edition I know of that has all the pictures like this one.

The title makes it sound like it's going to be sentimental- but instead it's a very large, moving biography of Michelangelo, told like an exciting story. When you write a biography like a story, so much has to be "filled in" by the author, since we participate in Michelangelo's daily life, conversations and thoughts. So I guess you could call it fictionalized-- but it really seems to represent the spirit of the man. After you read this you will be so "high" on Michelangelo you will go look up every statue!

The author gives his opinions- his way of understanding the statues is brilliant, you will never see these ideas anywhere else. It really made me understand the man and his statues well beyond simple admiration.

This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read, especially the exciting chapter on how he carved the David, "The Giant"- imagine a description of carving a statue being told like an adventure! He brings his intelligent analysis and emotions to the scene and it's is one of the most fascinating things I've ever read.

A Masterpiece of a Book

I originally purchased this book out of curiosity. I wanted to learn about and study a genius' life. A lover of art and design, I was naturally drawn to Michelangelo. After a substantial research on the best biographies based on his life and work, I was more than convinced that this book was it. And it didn't disappoint me at all!

I had never been to Italy when I started reading. A few months later, my sister and I planned a weekend in Europe, and partly because of this book, I convinced my sister we had to spend a weekend in Rome. Shortly after, I spent a week in Florence, and it was the very first time I felt like an informed tourist, knowing what I was marveling at.

The Agony and the Ecstasy is a novel-like biography of Michelangelo intertwined with historical accounts and facts about his life. It is written in such a way you won't want to put the book down. I felt like I lived inside Michelangelo's head; like I really got to know his person, simultaneously studying art and design history. It's set during the Italian Renaissance, and Michelangelo was a central figure of that glorious period. The book is filled with information. So far, it is the most substantial book I've read, and it's the first time I've taken my time reviewing a book.

The book is by no means an easy read; It took me weeks to finish. In fact, when I first bought it, I had to set it aside before I made it halfway, and I had to re-read it from the start. As I read the last pages, my heart ached as Michelangelo was getting weaker and weaker. It was quite an experience feeling like I lived side by side such a genius. All the masterpieces he forged during his life—just wow!

This book has sparked a deeper interest in me for art and design, and now for a newfound love: sculpture.

One of the best books I've ever read

This book depicts one of the most fascinating eras in human history and makes us feel as if we are there.
All that unique period of the Reneaissance,- the glorious time of "Rebirth",- about 500 years ago, just when Columbus discovered America,- reviving the classical visual arts of ancient Greece and Rome,- with its most outstanding artists as well as highest-ranked religious persons,- popes, monks, rebels, and also military leaders and kings,- is painted on a vast canvas in front of the flabbergasted reader, providing a panorama of southern Europe at that time,- teaching him also about the daily life in Italy, its special foods, its dresses, its professions, its customs, its views, its architecture, its proverbs.
The English is classical yet clear and flowing.
The characters come alive through witty descriptions, the author also provides many facts about the beaux arts,- about marble, frescoes, painting, enlarging, perspectives, stone-cutting, sculpting,- all that as if by the way, without imposing and without becoming too scholarly, though he'd researched those subjects for years.
One discovers the secret religious, artisctic and psychological codes that lie behind each masterpiece, seeing them with refreshed opened eyes even after having known them for years from albums and classes.
The presumptuous tiitle is correct, indeed, emphasizing the agony but mostly the ecstasy of the artist, filling such lofty words with true meaning, connecting earth and heaven, being highly instructive yet colorful, dramatic, balanced.
And above all towers the wonderful man, Michelangelo, whose struggles become exemplary.
By depicting the masterpiseces of this creator of the most famous sculptures in the world,- the giant "David", the radiating "Moses", the heart-rending "Pieta",- the author Irving Stone (Stone!- What a fortunate "coincidence"!) created his own great masterpiece, touching the vary origins of life,- the rock from which we cut out our civilization,- our cities and houses,- with raw passion, tender love, and eternal faith.
I'd already read the book once, but had to purchase it so I could have it at home with me in my possession, and read it again and again, enjoying every moment. Highly recommanded, from every aspect!!!! Also a great gift for everyone who strives to pave his own individual way in life notwithstanding its dangers and disappoinmtments.

This hefty book (250 pages, 8.5" X 11") is chock full of detailed information, personal musings, photos and diagrams, and practical tips. Thomas Elpel is a do-it-yourselfer after my own heart, and what he has compiled here chronicles his adventures of building his own home in rural Montana as well as experiences with other building projects. He and his wife were forced by circumstances to find inexpensive solutions for all of the challenges of building their home, and they managed to do this without sacrificing their commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Their home is a true hybrid, with the first floor being slip-formed stone masonry and the second story of logs, all sourced locally and ecologically. Thomas explains in great detail exactly how he put together this house, sufficiently for others to follow his lead without much more need for instruction.

In addition, the book is liberally dosed with Thomas's philosophy of how to homestead ecologically in the 21st Century. He starts with how to choose an appropriate location, then proceeds to describe strategies for disaster-proofing your home. He emphasizes how important it is to define the goals you have for your home before even coming up with a design.

Part Two of the book explores principles of energy efficiency, delving into a discussion of the need for excellent insulation, coupled with thermal mass and solar gain for a truly ecological house. The pros and cons of various insulation systems are defined, with charts of R-values. etc. There is a chapter devoted to interior air quality.

Part Three launches into the nitty gritty of exactly how to build using the methods that the author is familiar with. There is a thorough review of various strategies for creating footings, foundations and floors. This leads to a primer about the properties of concrete and how to mix and pour it. The instructions for building stone walls are specific to slip-forming, which tends to be fairly straight forward and simpler for folks who are not skilled in the art of free-form stone masonry.

The log-building technique that Thomas chose to use for his house is one of the simpler approaches, where little notching and careful fitting and trimming is required. Round logs are just stacked one on top of the other, using rebar pins to hold them in place. It is possible to build entire walls this way, and then cut out doors and windows later. The spaces between the logs are eventually insulated and chinked to make the wall air tight.

The basics of strawbale building are presented in one chapter, detailing how a large load-bearing strawbale shop was built. The information about strawbale is not as thorough as it is with the previous chapters on stone and log building, but there is enough of an overview to give the reader an idea of what is involved.

All of the wall-building techniques described so far require a framed roof of some sort, and the author goes into some detail about the possibilities for doing this. One method shown is fairly simple and straight forward, where a log ridge pole is placed first, and then rafters are bolted together on top of this, supported at the other end with another log. This can then support a variety of roofing materials, such as metal sheets or shingles.

In order to present a thorough overview of all of the basics of house building, the author also has surprisingly comprehensive chapters on plumbing and electrical wiring. Strategies for solar water and space heating are discussed.

All-in-all I give this book very high marks for providing useful information compiled in a logical and detailed manner. "Our house may look expensive, but the reality is that we only have about $10 a square foot into it. The whole house cost about as much as the average new car. Yet I have seen some million dollar homes that looked like junk. Appearance, like energy efficiency, is more a product of design than of cost. You can take the same materials and arrange them poorly or arrange them well."

"With a combined income averaging $10,000 to $12,000 a year we lived simply and invested everything we could in building materials. Construction proceeded slowly throughout the process, due to our chronic lack of money. We moved into the house after the second summer, with no doors, few windows, and no insulation in the roof. Winter stopped about three feet from the stove. This might all seem a little rough, but I later realized that we saved at least $150,000 in interest payments by eliminating the need for a loan. That is not a bad wage for a couple years of camping out!"

While the author is a knowledgeable on the subject, if you are looking for a book that covers the topic in greater detail then check out Tomm Stanley's book "Stone House: A Guide to Self-Building With Slipforms". The material is covered in greater detail and in a well thought out manner.

Excellent psychological thriller based on tragic historical WWII event

This is an excellent psychological thriller based on a tragic historical event that occurred during WWII, and it tells the story of an immigrant family caught up in the events of the day. The author's husband's grandfather perished in the downing of the ship in the title. Her impassioned writing brings a sense of urgency and character to what is also a valuable history lesson along the way. This is a terrific novel!
