About the Author
Katherine Schipper is the Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting at the Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. She is a former Board member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), a past president of the American Accounting Association and a winner of its Outstanding Educator award, and a member of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

Good manual but it is incomplete.

This solutions manual is good but it has only solutions to only half the problems in the 14th edition of the textbook. The main textbook is really difficult and it should be accompanied by a proper solutions manual. It's not reasonable on publisher's part to sell this half empty solutions manual.

However, there is one solutions manual which has the solutions for all the problems in the 14th edition. It is called 'Solution Manual for Financial Accounting: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods and Uses [Paperback], 14th Edition Paperback'. It's ISBN is 9781133372493. This book is occasionally available on Amazon. If you want a proper solutions manual, you must buy this book. Put it on your wish-list.

About the Author
Professor Enrico Drioli has been working in Membrane Science and Membrane Engineering for many years, beginning as a student in Chemistry at the University of Naples. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials at the University of Calabria, where he founded the Institute of Membrane Technology of the Italian Research Council in 1993. He served there as Director until December 2008. He also served as Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Calabria from 1982 to 1985.

His scientific activity has focused mainly on the following fields: Membrane Science and Engineering, Membranes in Artificial Organs, Integrated Membrane Processes, Membrane Preparation and Transport Phenomena in Membranes, Membrane Distillation and Membrane Contactors, and Catalytic Membrane and Catalytic Membrane Reactors.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including:

Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Paul Sabatier of Toulouse (France) (8 July 2009); International Cooperation Honor Award, September 2005, given by the Membrane Industry Association of China (MIAC) for his special dedication to the International Cooperation between China and Europe in the field of membrane and science technology; President of the European Society of Membrane Science and Technology (today European Membrane Society) (1982 - 1998); Member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Grand Water Research Institute at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Israel (since 2004); Member and Moderator of the Research Advisory Council of the Middle East Desalination Research Center Oman, Muscat (since May 1997); Member of the International Advisory Board of the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (since 2007); Founding member of the European Federation on Regenerative Medicine (since 2006); Expert on the panels of the OECD project “Nanotechnology and clean water” (www.oecd.org/sti/nano).

He is also the author of more 530 scientific papers, 18 patents in the field of Membrane Science and Technology, and 10 scientific books .

About the Author
Klaus Engel earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Stuttgart. He is a researcher at Siemens Corporate Research, Inc. in Princeton, NJ. Markus Hadwiger earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology. He is a senior researcher in the Medical Visualization department at the VRVis Research Center in Vienna, Austria. Joe Kniss earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah's School of Computing. He investigates volume rendering, volume light transport, human-computer interaction, and image processing at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute in Salt Lake City, UT. Christof Rezk-Salama earned his PhD from the University of Erlangen, working in the Computer Graphics Group. He is an assistant professor at the Computer Graphics and Multimedia Group of the University of Siegen, Germany. Daniel Weiskopf earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Tubingen, Germany. He is an Assistant Professor of Computing Science and co-director of the Graphics, Usability, and Visualization Lab at Simon Fraser University, Canada.

A very pragmatic book!

While volume graphics have historically been in the realm of scientific visualization, modern GPU's make it possible to render gaseous phenomena such as clouds and fire using true volumetric data in games and simulators at high framerates. Using real-time ray casting to render these objects is quite feasible on modern GPU's, but it's an intimidating-sounding technique.

It really isn't, and this book helps to demystify volumetric rendering using 3D textures, GPU ray-casting, and other techniques. It really isn't hard to understand the concepts; this book presents the math behind it well without going overboard - it's all well-explained.

What's really valuable, however, is all the practical advice stashed in here. If you've experimented with real-time ray casting before, you've likely beaten your head against the wall fighting sampling artifacts, figuring out how to properly add procedural noise to the results, and squeezing enough performance out of your fragment program to not slow down the rest of your scene. If you got past all those hurdles, then you probably gave up when you had to figure out how to deal with intersections between your volume and the rest of your scene, or what to do when the camera goes inside the volume.

This book has chapters on all of those topics, and that's what makes this an invaluable reference for volume graphics that are part of bigger applications. Most of the other research and material on this subject assume you're rendering a single object in isolation, but in a game engine that isn't the case. This book bridges the gap between scientific visualization, games and other visual simulation applications, and finally makes these exciting techniques accessible to a whole new class of applications.

Once it all comes together, the results are truly amazing. You'll find yourself using volume graphics for all sorts of situations and adding an incredible air of reality to your applications as a result. Highly recommended!

Good theory book, not so much programmers' book

This is a great book to learn much of the theory for volume rendering. Though there are some program listings, most are fragments. Some contain pseudo code which makes for a difficult experience when a developer is trying to understand the program let alone the theory.

All in all, still quite a good book with rich theory; color photos and beautiful glossy pages however I would not recommend as a sole source of reading for entry-level volume graphic developers.

If there were many more real time volume graphics books out there, it will be easier to compare.

The book is excellent in covering GPU Real Time Graphics. I wish it would had use CUDA or something else, or see an updated version of the book... that is far as the technology behind it. The concepts are great.

Whether you want to learn Shakespeare or teach Shakespeare, I highly recommend this book

I’ve always been fascinated by Shakespeare’s plays. But, like many, I find them confusing and hard to understand. I’ve taken classes on Shakespeare, purchased “Shakespeare for Dummies,” Googled translations and even watched the movies. But I still have a hard time grasping the language. Macbeth was also one of my least favorite plays when we read it in High School and, to be honest, I had forgotten pretty much everything about it – the plot, the characters, everything! So when I first started reading, I found myself really confused, trying to remember who was who! Let’s just say I was really thankful for the character index!!

Confusion aside, Macbeth #killingit was hilarious and entertaining. Once again, the OMG Shakespeare books took a play that should have been serious and boring (sorry, Shakespeare fans! This one was boring for me when I read it in school!) and made it hilarious and entertaining. By breaking down the complex language into modern phone/internet speak (via text messages, group chats, status updates, emojis, etc), I was actually able to grasp what the play was about and follow along!

Though I definitely struggled with the characters, the content itself was easy to grasp and follow and I really ended up enjoying it – YES, I ended up enjoying one of my LEAST FAVORITE Shakespeare plays thanks to this epic OMG Shakespeare interpretation!

Whether you want to learn Shakespeare or teach Shakespeare, I highly recommend this book. You’ll never view Macbeth in the same way, ever again! And you’ll (actually) enjoy reading it!

Macbeth #killingit is not my favorite of the OMG Shakespeare series--that honor remains with srsly Hamlet--but it's still a ridiculously funny and smart take on that play that you probably had to read in high school and don't remember much about. Hint: it's the one with the witches and you got to say "damned spot" out loud in English class without getting in trouble.

If you haven't seen anything in this series before, it's basically a social media take on Shakespeare's plays. It's very emoji-heavy. This one's a bit different from YOLO Juliet and srsly Hamlet in that Carbone incorporates even more social media platforms here, and it's hilarious. We have the witches pinning things to their Kingterest board (ingredients for spells, obvi), and Lady Macbeth's maid checking her mistress' symptoms on KingMD Symptom Checker.

And Great Birnam Wood checking in to Dunsinane was hilarious.

Again, this is definitely a book for people who've already read the original play. There's no substitute for Shakespeare, but this is a hilarious and witty supplement.

About the Author

Lucy Maud Montgomery, known as Maud, was born in 1874 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, where Anne of Green Gables is set. Maud's mother died when she was just a baby and so Maud was brought up by her strict grandparents. She became a teacher, and although she didn't enjoy, it gave her lots of time to write. She had her first poem published at the age of 15, and went on to write hundreds of short stories, poems, and novels throughout her life. Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908 and was an immediate success. She died in 1942.

Comments on Degrees of Belief

The new book,DEGREES OF BELIEF. is much more than the subtitle, Subjective Probability and Engineering Judgment, would imply. The author presents a scholarly, sensible treatise that covers both theory and practice and, most importantly, builds a beautiful bridge between them.
The various quotes from lectures and writings of Karl Terzaghi, Ralph Peck and other giants of the engineering profession add much to the book. Moreover, the author's emphasis on the wholeness of theory and practice and that regardless of the paradigm, judgment is imperative,make this book so outstanding.

Refreshingly Candid

An excellent treatment of a number of the schools of thought underlying the study of probability, which, along with decision making, lies at the heart of risk management. As with Koen's "Discussion of the Method", Vick's candid admission that the fundamental assumptions of engineering are built largely on approximations, is downright sobering. Again like Koen, Vick reaches far beyond his own profession of engineering to find answers to the tough questions and similarly, he treats his subject with a healthy dose of humour and human interest.

One of the best books I've ever read

In over 25 years as a practicing engineer, this is one of the best books I've ever read. It believe that it should be required reading for civil engineers prior to attaining a license to practice. Vick deals with the realities of the practice through candid discussions of uncertainty, judgment, expertise, overconfidence, and accepted methods. The material is centered around geotechnical engineering, but is equally and directly applicable to other areas such as hydrologic/hydraulic engineering, traffic engineering, ocean engineering, or any other sub-discipline that deals with natural systems directly. Make no mistake, it is a difficult read, but it is worth the time and effort.
