I do recommend this book because it is great if you do not have too many hours to devote to the test. It goes straight to the speaking points you need to know to do well in the test. The 240 Speaking topics definitely are a major help.
I was very happy to see the results. I got a total of 109 from 120 with the least of reading at 24/30. Highly advised to study from this book but if you want a score of 26 or higher in reading you need to have a high knowledge of a lot of vocabulary as many of the toefl exams include hard vocabulary. Overall, a great help and a useful read. I highly recommend getting this book it’s pretty cheap and super helpful.

You will no longer be bowled over by simple questions

Have you ever had a problem holding a conversation with someone else? Many people have that problem, from rich to poor. This book helps you to know what you can say when people ask you certain questions. For example, if you are which country you would like to visit, there are sample answers that you can adapt to help you keep the conversation going. It is superbly simple to read and understand the book. I must say that the author put a lot of research into the book.

All I am going to say is that everybody should read the book. The sample answers to each question will make it easier for you to know what to say when asked questions in a conversation.

This book offers succinct and accurate pointers on how to deliver a high scoring speaking sample on any English proficiency test. Each questions is accompanied by a number of exercises that are aimed at honing a student's use of expressions a spoken grammatical accuracy. Terrific Textbook!

I give this book a 5 because it covers all the conceivable topics within Urban Economics with a fair amount of attention to each topic/chapter. The author does something interesting which has inspired me to further my own research -- the research questions at the end of the chapters (different from the chapter questions). These research questions encourage the reader/student to take the material learned from that chapter and go beyond the scope of what was discussed. That is a great tool to learn, and I believe that more textbooks should be as inclusive as this by Professor Edwards!
The author is also so incredibly well-read, that the references to each chapter might as well be "a compendium of all possible sources within urban economics" -- which is great because then someone can go beyond the textbook to start researching on his/her own (her references sections are far more exhaustive than any other textbook on urban economics).

Overall, this book was fantastic! I use it regularly!

About the Author
Bill VanPatten is Professor and Director of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies at Texas Tech University. His areas of research are input and input processing in second language acquisition and the effects of formal instruction on acquisitional processes. He has published widely in the fields of second language acquisition and language teaching and is a frequent conference speaker and presenter. His publications include Making Communicative Language Teaching Happen (with James F. Lee, 2003,McGraw-Hill), From Input to Output: A Teacher’s Guide to Second Language Acquisition (2003, McGraw-Hill), Processing Instruction: Theory, Research, and Practice (2004, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates) and most recently, Theories in Second Language Acquisition: An Introduction (with Jessica Williams, 2007, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates). He is the lead author of Vistazos, ¿Sabías que...?, Destinos and Sol y viento. Dr. VanPatten is the 2007 recipient of the Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, awarded jointly by ACTFL and NYSAFLT. When not engaged in academic activities, he writes fiction and performs stand-up comedy. He has recently published his first work of fiction, a collection of short stories titled Chicago Tales, published by Outskirts Press (2007).

James F. Lee is the Head of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. His research interests are in the areas of second language reading comprehension, input processing, and exploring the relationship between the two. His research has appeared in a number of scholarly journals and publications, including the co-authored books with Alessandro Benati Second Language Processing: Theory, Problems and Possible Solutions (2007, Continuum) and Delivering Processing Instruction in Classrooms and Virtual Contexts (2007, Equinox). Other publications include the book Tasks and Communicating in Language Classrooms (2000, McGraw-Hill) and the co-authored book Making Communicative Language Teaching Happen, Second Edition (2003, McGraw-Hill). He has also co-authored secveral textbooks, including ¿Sabias que…? Beginning Spanish, Vistazos, ¿Qué te parece?, and Ideas: Lecturas, estrategias, actividades y composiciones. A great book for college teachers but not secondary ones.

I used this book for a graduate level course on Foreign Language Teaching Methodology given by my school district. I am a secondary level French teacher. The theories of instruction that this book explores are very enlightening, however the practical examples it offers are more suitable for university level instruction. My biggest complaint with this text is that the examples of communicative language teaching methods it offers are in English and are too vague to lend themselves to practical application. One is left wanting more specifics than the examples give, especially when the text advocates such activities as "brainstorming" or group input activities. For example, how can one brainstorm in the target language when that is precisely what one is trying to teach? I made lots of notes in my copy of the text, but I have not had success in applying what I've learned in my classroom.

Has made me rethink my teaching of language

I recently returned to teaching Spanish after several years of teaching English composition. So far during this first year back I've had many moments of frustration in teaching grammar and conjugations despite knowing that the kids were only learning it for a test/quiz and would not remember it much longer than that. What's the point? Lee and VanPatten's book should be required reading for all language teachers as it provides much food for thought as to the efficacy or even the 'point' of traditional grammar-based language teaching. Language teaching is so grammar-driven because it's the easiest way to 'measure' student learning and give them a grade. I find Lee and VanPatten's research into input processing very intriguing, and obviously a must for language teaching if we are to help our students truly 'learn' or acquire a language.

Useful for new students of second language acquisition

I read this as a master's candidate in a TESL in Washington, DC. I found it relatively easy to read. Still, it's academically written and focuses on theories and research done on second language acquisition. Topics covered include grammar in communicative language, speaking, reading and writing. This book is for those who want to take a step forward into academia and research in teaching methodology.

Good reference guide

This book is a great reference guide for students and professionals. Although it may not fit in my pocket, it is definitely smaller than the rest of my textbooks. A must have for anyone who wants a quick pathology reference. There is a picture(s) for every pathology.

For its size, this is a fine book on pathology. The portability and completeness of this book make it top notch and a required element in any imaging suite's library. Students will love it as an option for hauling large text books to their clinical sites. It is filled with accurate images, both MRI & CT, giving users different perspectives on the same pathology. Great book and a definite must have.

Bravo, two thumbs up!

I haven't been to a performance of this play, but I read the script after my son was required to read it for a college course. I think Deborah Brevoort has done an outstanding job of making important statements about human suffering and healing. I don't think this play was intended to study terrorism, but makes deep resonating observations about loss and grief/suffering, which are universal. I think she also makes points about how we can be so entrenched in our own losses that we fail to recognize the suffering of others. I think there is a great perception on the part of the author regarding several aspects of human nature/the human psyche. In my (humble) opinion, there is a spiritual side to this play which is never overtly stated, but inherent in the choice of material and its treatment. Ms. Brevoort is to be commended. I personally think she could well have written a short story or novella and reached a wider audience. It must be a powerful play when it is performed well, but will probably never get the attention it deserves. Bravo, Ms. Brevoort, you get two thumbs up from me!

Falling in Love with Brevoort

A friend recommended this author to me, and since reading this script, I have read as many more of hers as I can get my hands on. This is a lovely piece, written in a poetic style that compliments the subject matter. Brevoort is a restrained and intelligent writer, and this is a fantastic piece for theatres looking for a female-centric script. By the end I was bawling. It's lovely. It's moving. It should be produced more. I also really recommend her "Signs of Life", though you may have to order it through the Samuel French catalogue, which is really the only other place I've been able to track down her scripts. They're more expensive than on Amazon, unfortunately.

This is a no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point book, which effectively covers the topic of chemical process control. Though it is quite old now, much of the information is still very relevant and useful.

The way of simplifying explanations and writing from an understanding point of view (rather than merely presenting facts) is great and I wish all books were written in such a way!

A book on Process "Dynamics" and Control

Up to the late 1970's the trend in chemical process control was the development of algorithms that if found successful were then marketed to companies with process control problems or with new processes. The use of incorrect models led to disenchantment and loss of interest both in academia and industry. Eventually, "the realization that the crucial problem was to understand enough about the "dynamics" of the chemical systems so that advanced control procedures could be implemented" led to books like this by Stephanopoulos that addressed this issue. This book emphasizes the analysis of the dynamic behavior of the chemical process. Although first published in 1984, it is still a popular introductory book in chemical process control.

Comprehensive guide to translating French to English

This is the only book of which I am aware that provides comprehensive and specific advice concerning the difficult assignment of translating French to English. It not only offers principles and precepts but it also offers outstanding examples of possible translations. The focus is not on literal translation but rather focues on the process of making the translation into English that mirrors the author's original design. The recently issued softcover edition makes this a must buy for any advanced student of french.

A Workbook With No Answer Key ?

I purchased this book in order to do a self-study of french to english translation. Though the book seems to have many good exercises, there is no answer key to the exercises in the book. I don't know how one is supposed to utilize the exercises if no answers are given. I emailed the publisher (The University Press in Lanham, MD) several times before they responded that they do not have an answer key on file. Thus I feel like the book was a real waste of money. Also, I read in another review that this book would be good for a translator of any language. I disagree, the focus of the book is french, and I think a non-french speaker will not find it very useful.

Great for any language

This book is helpful for anyone interested in language translation. It is specifically for FrenchEnglish, but the concepts presented are valid for any language pair. I found it interesting to read and comprehensive.
