About the Author
Rubin Battino MS has a private practice and is also Adjunct Professor for the Department of Human Services at Wright State University. He has over ten years of experience as a facilitator in a Bernie Siegel style support group, is President of the Milton H. Erickson Society of Dayton and was co-chair of a committee to establish certification standards for training in Ericksonian hypnotherapy. Thomas L. South has a PhD in clinical psychology and has taught courses in Ericksonian hypnotherapy at the University of Dayton and at Wright State University. He is a founder and first president of the Milton H. Erickson Society of Dayton, Ohio.

Hypnosis is as old as the human race. The phenomenon known as hypnosis has existed since the beginning of recorded history, as found in the folklore of ancient cultures. In ancient times, as well as in the "primitive" tribes of today, it has been and continues to be associated with religious ceremonies, magic, the supernatural, and the occult. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks had dream centers (Udolf, 1981) where people came to fast and pray with the hope that their dreams could be interpreted so as to solve their problems and give them guidance. Under these circumstances their dreams were probably hypnotically induced. Even today, Hindu medicine men practice their ageless forms and variations of hypnosis for healing purposes. Magicians in the time of Genghis Khan (Erickson and Rossi, 1980, Vol. III, p. 3) practiced group suggestion to obtain visual and auditory hallucinations. According to Marco Polo, medieval men used hypnosis in mystic rites to produce fear and to intensify beliefs in the supernatural and the occult. With this long history of supernaturalism and mysticism, it is no wonder that the general public's attitude toward hypnosis, as well as that of many professionals, has been and, to a certain extent, still is one of misunderstanding, antagonism and fear.

I wonder if you can imagine

I first heard of Milton H. Erickson through NLP. The Milton model of nlp is named after Milton Erickson who used artfully vague language language patterns to put patients in trance. My Voice Will Go with You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Ericksonby Sidney Rosen fueled my initial curiosity. That book focused mainly on Erickson's storytelling method, and his often counterintuitive yet incredibly effective approach to therapy, often through using healing metaphors.

I found his skill with language patterns particularly fascinating, and inspiring, although there is far more to Erickson's approaches than that.

So, when I trained in nlp and hypnotised many people practising with his scripts, I was quite astounded at how effective his indirect approach was in putting people in trance. I don't know if you can imagine how much fun it was learning how to stack metaphors, and use embedded commands.

A professional hypnotherapist and fellow trainer on my course recommended this book, saying it was better than any other four books about Erickson, and that it also could be used as a teaching manual.

Erickson's daughters Roxanna and Betty contribute a foreword to this book, as does Ernest Rossi. If both of Milton's daughter use this book as a training manual at their institute, then....

I own many books on Erickson, and my friend is quite correct. This book is better any other four books on Erickson.

If you are wondering about how this book relates to nlp, the authors do cover the different language patterns in much detail, and even explain the meta model. In this book I particularly like the popcorn metaphor. You might wonder what eating popcorn has to do with premature ahem closure, you'll wander know more after reading that segment.

No stone is left unturned by the authors in putting together this truly brilliant and comprehensive manual. It is my pleasure to recommend this book, and the other one I mentioned, as two must own books on Erickson.

If you are not already a trained hypnotherapist, may I say from personal experience, there is no substitute for taking a hypnosis or nlp training.

A person can learn many things..and a curious person can learn so much, and when you go deep inside it's like something opens up, and the more you open up to the opportunities the more opportunities open up, and you discover you're developing new neural connections...new perceptions..new understandings that will fuel your curiosity even further...

Simply, one of the best manuals you could ever ask for!

This manual is truly a Master work... the book touches on everything from early history of hypnosis, NLP language patterns, metaphor, inductions, etc. The book is written in language very easy to read and understand. The ideas are brought forward very clearly, and one gets a sense of the personality and substance of the authors themselves. There are many books out there about Erickson, his work and techniques... This one should be at the top of any list and a must have for the library of every practitioner of the art.

Christian Emery is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Plymouth, UK. He was previously a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics. This is an excellent analysis of America's policies toward Iran during the 1978-79 Iranian Revolution. Using primary sources, like documents and interviews, Dr. Emery really seems to grasp the true dynamics of US policy during and after the revolution. More importantly, he delves deep into important historical debates, particularly the mystery surrounding an American effort to provide the Bazargan government with intelligence on Iraq just prior to the Iranian hostage crisis. For those who are interested in the origins of America's policies toward Iran, this book is a must read.

The funnyman host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report rants about things that are wrong with America, offering his “knee jerk beliefs” on everything from the liberal media to environmentalists. If we continue to secularize Christmas, he screeches, former carolers will become wandering, alcoholic bums, and insects will grow into giant, munching minivans. He advocates legalizing performance-enhancing drugs for athletes, since sports are entertainment. Taking on a blowhard persona, he attacks atheists—how could a god exist who created a group that so pisses him off? Atheists are more hated than gays, to whom we at least entrust our hair. Interspersed with Colbert’s shrill tirades are the voices of other characters, notably the more modulated tones of God, who claims to be fair since he does not intercede in the outcome of sports on which he bets. Patriotic drums, a mariachi band, and other music accompanies this hilarious audio. "I am American" - a satire and a fun read

Stephen Colbert's hilarious conservative satire "I am American (and so can you)" is a laugh-out-loud print extension of his comedy news show. Comedian Colbert pens his book through the guise of the same character that he plays on The Colbert Report. Tackling stereotypically conservative issues such as gay marriage, traditional family values and the future of the American dream, Colbert satirizes the far right's views as a well-intended but poorly informed news reporter.

His humor is stupid, much like his character. It's not meant to be read in one sitting, though. Margin and footnotes are allusive of the TV show's segment The Word. Colbert's humor is far different from his counterpart, Jon Stewart in that Colbert assumes the character (or caricature) of the people with whom he disagrees the most. Stewart in much more surfacely confrontational.

I recommend the book. It's funny. Hilariously funny. But don't expect sharp wit. It's an in-your-face satire of the conservative ideal.

If you like the Colbert Report, you'll love this book. If you don't like, or don't know, Stephen's completely insane Comedy Central TV show, you will probably still do a good bit of laughing, although perhaps against your will.

Colbert's basic shtick is that he is a conservative nutjob. He does it so well that some conservatives really do believe he's on their side. Of course, it's all satire; he's actually a progressive in very thin disguise.

Another important part of his shtick is that he's an egomaniac. He manages to combine these two elements quite deftly. He portrays a white male Catholic (which apparently he really was as a little boy) who has incredibly confused concepts of reality, religion, politics, and just about everything else.

The format of the book is also interesting. It has certain recurring "advertising" items, a segment entitled "Stephen Speaks for Me: A chance for average Americans to agree with what I think." Each chapter starts with a prologue shaped into an American flag, with one word where the field of stars would be, and all caps red print making up the stripes on the white background. He IS America, you see! There are marginal notes and footnotes that are quite as funny as the main text. There are two pages of stickers, one of flags to use for marginal comments, and one of stickers to put on other books to grant them "The Stephen T. Colbert for the Literary Excellence." (Yes, that superfluous article is in there.) There are fake games and quizzes and puzzles, and generally plenty of opportunity to have fun in the mad, mad, mad Colbert Nation.

There are also some real insights, so beware if you thought it was all just for laughs. You may find yourself laughing at something which is really too true to be funny, the way zen masters hit you upside the head.

Same old stuff "as seen on TV"

Ayn Rand, in one of her books (I forget which), has the protagonist, an author, who is known for his large, long books, write a book which is much shorter than usual for him. A critic, upon reading the book, calls it "a cheat". This book is a cheat. It is printed on very thick paper (about the thickness of a normal book's endplates); it has large white spaces between the lines of text, and is filled with extraneous material (e.g. stickers, many pictures of Stephen Colbert showing various expressions, and a ribbon bookmark made to give the impression of a quality book).

As for content, it contains a rehash of Stephen's nightly show, "The Colbert Report". There are different lines of text from those in the show, but they express essentially the same thing. The margin notes are reminiscent of the written comments appearing in the "Word" segment of his show. They are amusing, but rarely funny in the book. I never cracked a smile in reading this, whereas his show is uproarious.

I think Stephen is capitalizing on his fame and rabid following at this time to publish a book which essentially says nothing original.

I sold my copy (on Amazon) after reading it once. I saw nothing in it that would make me want to keep it, or even re-read it.

In a word (pun intended), borrow this book from a library and read it. There is no reason to spend money on this "cheat".

(Additionally, my copy of the book had a publisher's error, in that the front endplate was folded over twice, as in the bookbinding process. This, of course, did not interfere with reading the book. However, it did detract from the virgin condition of most new books.)

Combination of Lajos Egri + John Cleaver on Character

This book seemed to be one-half Lajos Egri (The Art of Creative Writing) and one-half John Cleaver (Immediate Fiction). Like both of these authors, Brandilyn Collins explains how to create well-developed, compelling characters that you can let loose in your stories.

All of the author's techniques tie back to Stansislavsky's "Method Acting." Each chapter starts with an analysis of one of techniques of Method Acting. Then that technique is summarized in terms of ficiton writing. The remaining chapter fills in the details and gives examples.

In addition to the techniques of character development, the author presents several narrative frameworks for the overall plotting of the story. She also discusses crafting each scene using character objectives that flow from the character's Inner Values.

The chapter on dialog was interesting. Here, the author shows you how to link the hidden-message of dialog (sub-texting) back to the richly-developed psychological profile, or inner values, of the character.

I liked the book very much - particularly her conceptualization of Method Acting back to narrative writing and her well-explained examples. This book is different than many others describing character development. The author also includes exercises that the reader can pursue.

The start of a new era in character development

If you want to get a headstart into what is to come in the next wave of character development then get this book. In my opinion, the future of character development and the secrets in creating a real person on paper lies in the studies done by professional acting coaches.
How did I get this opinion? Well, I was so enlightened by the information in this writing manual that I read the books by the acting coaches Collins refers to and discovered that Collins has scraped the surfaced on a whole science. These acting coaches studied human behavior not only from a scientific point of view but from a sensory point of view. At the time these "Acting Scientists" wrote these books, human behavior sciences like psychology, psychiatry and hypnotherapy were making great strides and right along with them, "Acting Scientists" were adding these priniciples to their acting methods creating a science that changed acting forever. And today, thanks to Collins, Novelists who want to create a real person can benifit handsomely.
There is a thin line between a great novelist and a great actor and I hope to see more acting techniques being translated for the novelist who wants to be great.

What more can I say?

The other reveiwers have it right. After studying more than 30 titles on the craft of writing, I can say that this is by far the most useful work on developing believable and well-rounded characters that I have seen to date. The information is timely, practical, and accessible. The examples are well-organized and perfectly suited to the material. The writer can take what he learns and put into practice immediately. Excellent work!
