I love this book, I have the original in English. I agree with Warren Buffet's comment about it above. I read it again and again and profit a lot from it for my business, a mid sized chemical company. I ordered 8 books of the Spanish version in order to present 8 Spanish employees with it. I am a bit concerned because I have only received 2 books from the eight to date.

No indication about being Spanish version

The review for the book did not state that the paperback version was in spanish. The write-up about it was all in english. The word in parenthesis meant nothing to me since I do not know spanish. (Ganar) I assumed it was a publishers name or something, especially since it started with a capital letter. I would suggest that books in another language be marked with bold red letters somewhere in the synopsis. The book itself may be great, but it was the marketing on the website that I am concerned with. I was able to return the book but I had to pay shipping for the english version to be sent when the original order was over $50 so shipping was free.

This product has a ton of information. It was recommended by a friend because I am not an accountant by trade but work in a position where it comes up daily. However the writing is quite small and reading some things requires a re read.

I really did not think it was possible for me to reduce my weight until I read this book and then met

I did not think it was possible for me to commit to losing the weight I had gained until I met Charles and read his informative book. The thought of giving up certain foods and wine and replacing my diet with the foods I was told to eat by Charles was mind blowing to me and I felt I would be setting myself up for failure. Well, through Charles I was able to surprise myself with a weight lose of 35 pounds to date and I know I will be able to lose the 15 pounds I need to lose to reach my goal. Thank you Charles!

Practical (not just theoretical)

Don't let the name fool you, this is a pretty thorough look at the Strategic Planning process, by someone with experience at helping people think through the future of their organization. What I appreciated most was that the author is not lost in theory, but rather works you through a practical approach, under the assumption that you are going to use the material, not just read about it. Included with the book is a CD with templates to help you do just that. So many books on strategy are theoretical; this one is practical.

If you are looking for a book on the latest MBA ideas, this is not it (as its name implies). But it's ideal for someone with a small organization to run, who doesn't want to get knee deep in planning as a hobby, but needs practical help. Good work.

Useful how to do it view of strategic planning

We hear a lot about strategic planning. However, many of us probably are not very well versed on the subject. If you want a quick and dirty introduction that provides some tools, this book will suffice. While the book focuses on planning in the private sector, some elements are applicable to nonprofits and the public sector (for instance, SWOT analysis is widely used). However, one should know that the primary focus is on business.

What is the book about. Quickly to summarize in the author's own words (Page 1): "This book is about getting from Point A to Point B more effectively and having more fun along the way. Part of that journey is the strategy and part of it is the planning, development, and execution."

The book features 20 chapters and has a CD that can help understand and use basic tools of planning. To illustrate, consider SWOT analysis. This is an evaluation of the internal aspects of an organization--its strengths and weaknesses. There is also an external evaluation of opportunities and threats. Hence, SWOT--strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The CD provides a template for SWOT.

There is discussion, too, of other aspects of strategic planning, such as benchmarking.

In short, a reasonably good introduction to strategic planning in the business world.

Decent read, but not impressive.

As with most Dummies books, I like the way that layout of important information are organized; the symbols and icons used to make the guide very readable.

This book is probably a one-stop theoretical book for someone who wants to learn more about business ideas, and is more like a textbook that a student uses to study for Business Administration or Organization Development. It basically combines both information into a book that is useful for someone who has little or no background in Business Studies, and will be useful to someone who does not have a corporate background.

I was not too impressed with the software that was provided as the templates were based on the information that could be found in the book and could fairly easily be typed onto a template or be incorporated into the book in the first place. I was hoping that they have templates either in the form of Word or Excel where you could make changes - something more dynamic than a PDF file.

However, it has some useful videos links for people who may not have the time to run through the chapters and instead opt for a audio-visual experience provided. Again, these videos are based on theories that are in the book and are the typical facilitation sessions that one will receive while working in a corporation.

Overall, I would say that this book is good for someone who:

(a) has no business studies background and wants to have some business/marketing knowledge.
(b) is working in a corporate setting and wants to understand the business culture of the organization.
(c) intends to have a small business - some ideas like SWOT analysis, competitor analysis etc are quite useful.
(d) a facilitator or CON-SELLtant who wishes to sell their solutions to their audience.
(e) a job-seeker who wants to sound intelligent during an interview.

About the Author
Lorin Wood was raised in an extraordinarily creative home with family members who encouraged him to pursue the visual arts from his earliest years. His love of illustration and design was refined by copying his father's industrial design portfolio and getting a healthy dose of the work of Syd Mead, Joe Johnston, and Ralph McQuarrie, among others. Wood s passion for spaceships and robots led to a career as a conceptual designer that has spanned nearly two decades, working across multiple facets within the entertainment industry from animation, visual effects, and previsualization, to product and installation design. Some of his film credits include 2008 s The Day the Earth Stood Still for 20th Century Fox under legendary visual effects supervisor Jeffrey Okun, 2006 s A Scanner Darkly by Richard Linklater for Warner Independent Pictures, and Unique, a film pitch with David Goyer at the Walt Disney Company. He also contributed to the video game Aliens: Colonial Marines for Sega and the popular Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software, where he created the game s muse robot, Claptrap. Lorin Wood is the founder of the popular blog Nuthin But Mech, which is also a popular book series featuring mech designs by some of the world s top concept artists and designers working in the industry today.

More Fantastic Mech Artwork

I have been waiting for the third book in this series and the wait was well worthwhile. Just as good as the first two but even more pages! The variety of artistic style is another plus. This is simply a great art book filled with nuthin' but mech. I love it and hope there will be more. I just can't stop admiring the creativity.

A Crazy, Funny, Nightmarish Future, right here in Toronto.

I follow Maia Sepp because I enjoy her writing style - easy, flowing and often very funny - and because her subject matter is refreshingly different. The story line in "Wake," as in "An Etiquette Guide to the End Times," is bold and challenging: Climate change. A techie world gone mad. Revengeful hacks, spies and lies. Relationships. Immigration nightmares.
I got caught up with Camilla Brightly's multiple difficulties and rooted for her. I worried about her. With her I felt the longing for some place that was hers, a place to which she belonged - home. Home: and then came memories of her dead mother which were powerful. Her father whom she loved dearly, gone - all the way to Greenland among melting ice sheets. News of him added to her worries and foretold a future nightmare for everyone.
While some might find the subject matter slightly on the dark side, the future a little bleak, the story is told with wonderful humour.
There are scenes that are hilarious, suggesting that everything might not really be so dire after all.

On another note, I found the scene with the Toronto Police Department pitch perfect - oh how I related!

Wake is a must read!

‘Wake’ is the prequel to ‘An Etiquette Guide to the End Times’ a soft sci-fi series by Maia Sepp, and humouroulsy gives us a peek into the future of “smart appliances” and how we may not be able to ever be un-connected. Sepp’s easy and humorous writing style makes for a great read. The book follows Camilla Brightly as she navigates her job, an internet hacker, and her car - which seems to have a mind of its own, all while keeping tabs on her father and trying to hide from her refrigerator! It’s a must read!

Another terrific book from the incomparable Maia Sepp! Like her first title in this series - An Etiquette Guide to the End Times - Camilla is a charming heroine struggling to deal with life's various curve balls and making hilarious mistakes. A fascinating look at what the future might hold for us all, including menacing refrigerators and, you know, the looming end times. A gem of a prequel.

Yves Saint Laurent, the charmed genius of effortless success, and Karl Lagerfeld, the patrician workhorse, engaged in a decades-long competition for hyperbolic headlines and jet-set celebrity, pitting their cliques against each other in bitch-slap feuds of sartorial splendor. Theirs is a world of glorious, hideous self-involvement, where heroin is an accessory, violent political unrest is an evening's amusement, and a close friend's suicide is, foremost, a contemptible blemish on an orchestrated image. Drake's subjects made their livings and their names dedicating themselves to the pursuit of surface perfection, and her comprehensive examination of their barbed, parallel arcs is appropriately superficial. These titanic designers crafted their personas as carefully as they put together their luxurious collections, and we come to know them as reflections in the mirror houses they built. The Beautiful Fall is a fascinating view into the Paris fashion scene during the intensely creative and revolutionary period of the 60's and 70's (and beyond). The book concentrates on fashion as lived by the rival camps of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, but its scope is much broader. Throughout a narrative that reads as compellingly as fiction, the author analyzes the socio-cultural events that shaped the Paris fashion world. Drake astutely pays homage to the symbiotic realtionship fashion has always had with society. She also taps into the fashion world's neuroses in all their terrifying glory: Saint Laurent's and Lagerfeld's ongoing fear of being outdone by the other; YSL's battles with his own creative demons; the manic way in which Lagerfeld surrounds himself with an everchanging fashion coterie that fuels his own creativity.

Drake's writing style is fluid, with her prose as rich and elegant as the world she depicts. Turning the pages of the book, one can see, taste and feel the luxe accoutrements that are the lot of fashion royalty: the sumptuous residences, the sit-down dinners for a hundred, the plush privelige of a chauffered limousine. Yet Drake also opens a door to the down side of fashion--the wounded egos as entourage members are cut loose, the heinous drug hangovers after all night parties at Le Palace, or the letdown of a fashion season fallen flat, when an anticipated collection is panned or ignored.

Class, too, is an overriding theme. The weight of the aristocracy is evoked, with its crushing confines of hierarchy and tradition. Overwhelming, too, are the shackles of design superstardom as Saint Laurent cracks under the weight of his own legend, his genius solicited season after season by a voracious Ready-to-Wear industry churning out clothes for the masses. YSL's torturous decades of self doubt are unflinchingly rendered as he struggles not only against drug and alcohol demons, but also to compete against the fashion standard he himself has set in his prolific early years. For as the author points out, it is every designer's damning quest to not only further their own body of work, but to create something new.

The Lagerfeld saga is given equal billing. Karl's veritable style assault on the industry over decades--the creation of tens of thousands of designs for dozens of labels--culminating in his triumph at Chanel--is an unparalleled tour de force in the design world. As Drake describes it, one can't help but feel that no man has poured more of himself into fashion than Lagerfeld, bringing not only a manic drive but a Renaissance Man's arsenal of knowledge, culture, and plain old street savvy. With the advent of youth-driven social forces like Rock music, MTV, and the rise of the supermodels, fashion became in fashion, and no-one has milked it more or used it to better advantage than Lagerfeld. The fact that Lagerfeld is actually taking the book to court in France (citing invasion of privacy) is unfortunate. Drake's portrait of both men is unflinching but not unflattering; it is fascinating, and above all, human.

Given the multiple tales of excess chronicled within, some might try to pass off the book as exploitative journalism or a cheap kiss-and-tell narrative. The book is neither. The Beautiful Fall is an astutely written, brilliant portrait of a history-making period in fashion that will forever stand as testimony to those tumultuous times. It is a must-read for anyone professing a serious interest in fashion.

Must-read for anyone even remotely interested in fashion

I have been a fashion writer for about 10 years and this is absolutely one of the best fashion biographies I've read since perhaps DV by Mrs. Vreeland. The Beautiful Fall is beautifully written--a richly detailed account of Paris in the 50's through 80's packed with fashion and Parisian history, insight, and delicious gossip and scandal. You'll feel like you're there at the party and front row at shows that took place long before the televised mania over fashion began in America in the early '90s. Fabulous photos, as well.

a BEAUTIFUL book

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Like Alicia Drake, I write on fashion, but the comparisons end there, as Drake, who is superlatively gifted author, truly exists in a league all her own. Her treatment of this gripping topic--fashion-world excesses and catfights in 1970s Paris--is nothing short of excellent: astonishingly well researched, fascinatingly detailed, and wonderfully readable. THE BEAUTIFUL FALL is a must-have for anyone who cares about clothing, or Paris, or just plain terrific writing.
