You only think you know this story. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer—the most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripper—seared himself into the American consciousness. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. To Derf Backderf, "Jeff" was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides. In My Friend Dahmer, a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psyche—a shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer that few ever really knew, and one readers will never forget.

Praise for My Friend Dahmer:

"The tone is sympathetic and enraged (‘Where were the damn adults?’), while not excusing or making the story unduly fascinating. Backderf’s writing is impeccably honest in not exculpating his own misdeeds . . . and quietly horrifying. A small, dark classic." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)?

"One of the best graphic novels I've read this year." -- USA Today's PopCandy

"One of the most thought-provoking comics released in a long time." -- Slate.com?

"Carefully researched and sourced with ample back matter, Backderf’s tragic chronicle of what shouldn’t have been is a real butt-kicker for educators and youth counselors as well as peers of other potential Dahmers. Highly recommended for professionals as well as true crime readers." —Library Journal

"This isnt a cautionary tale. Its insight sharedinsight arriving too late to save Dahmers victims, let alone Jeff himself, but perhaps soon enough to remind both teens and their caretakers that questioning peculiar behavior might be a better tack than ignoring or exploiting it." -- School Library Journal?

"Fortunately, cartoonist Derf Backderf isn't one to avoid the troubling, even terrifying, truths that lurk in the dark recesses of that notorious serial killer's early lifeand modern American life itself." -- Foreword Reviews

"A powerful, unsettling use of the graphic medium to share a profoundly disturbing story. . . . An exemplary demonstration of the transformative possibilities of graphic narrative." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Masterful. . . a rich tale full of complexity and sensitivity . . . There's something about Dahmer's life and crimes that seems almost crafted for treatment in the murky world of comix. Yet it's empathy and nuance, not gore, that put My Friend Dahmer alongside Alison Bechdel's Fun Home and David Small's Stitches in the annals of illustrated literature." —Cleveland Plain Dealer

"A new classic of the graphic novel genre. . . . A moving book that qualifies as one of the great graphic novels, a work of art." —Creative Loafing

"A well-told, powerful story. Backderf is quite skilled in using comics to tell this tale of a truly weird and sinister 1970s adolescent world."?—R. Crumb?

"Anyone who opens My Friend Dahmer to satisfy a morbid curiosity, and likewise anyone who expects to find no more than a cynical publishing venture here, is bound for disappointment. It is a horrifying read, yes, not so much for what it reveals about the sad early (and inevitably terrible) life of Jeffrey Dahmer, but because of what it reveals about the bland emotional landscape of Middle America, in this vision a petri dish for psychoses in many degrees and forms.?Backderf’s odd stylization, with figures that look like organic robots, is a perfect vehicle for this conception. His graphic approach is grotesque, droll, and it rags on reality as masses of kids knew and still know it.?Lots of books exist about the agonies and cruelty of the adolescent high school experience, but few so compellingly bring us straight into that soulless environment, showing the ways it can shelter, allow to burgeon, and, at the same time, be completely blind to real madness.?It wasn’t easy reading this book, but I’m glad I did."?—David Small, author and illustrator of Stitches, a National Book Award finalist and #1 New York Times bestseller

"Stunning. Horrifying. Beautifully done."?—Alison Bechdel, author and illustrator of Fun Home, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist

"My Friend Dahmer is a brilliant graphic novel and surely ranks among the very best of the form. Like Alison Bechdel’sFun Home, the book plumbs a dark autobiographical mystery, trying in retrospect to understand actions and motivations to piece together the makings of a tragedy. Like Charles Burns’s Black Hole, it’s a starkly etched portrait of the horror of high school in the 1970s. Comparisons aside, My Friend Dahmer is entirely original, boldly and beautifully drawn, and full of nuance and complexity and even a strange tenderness. Out of the sordid and grotesque details of Dahmer’s life, Derf has fashioned a moving and complex literary work of art."?—Dan Chaon, award-winning author of Among the Missing and You Remind Me of Me

"Just when you think you know all there is to know about Jeffrey Dahmer— one of the most notorious criminals of the past century—along comes My Friend Dahmer, which adds significantly to our understanding of this rare form of psychopathology. The graphic novel format helps the reader appreciate the adolescent mind-set of Dahmer’s high school classmates. Although none of those who grew up with Dahmer expected to hear what they learned on July 22, 1991, when he was caught, no one was really surprised, either.?This unique book allows the reader to listen in on the fascinating reminiscences of those who watched the developing mind of a future serial killer."?—Louis B. Schlesinger, PhD, Professor of Forensic Psychology, John Jay College of Criminal Justice

"It’d be so easy to pigeonhole and think that the reason you can’t stop reading My Friend Dahmer is because it offers a voyeuristic peek inside the monster. And it does. But as it turns its self-aware eye on the boy who doesn’t belong, the real magic trick is how equally hateful and sad you feel for the monster himself. This one’s still haunting me."?—Brad Meltzer, author of Identity Crisis and The Inner Circle, a #1 New York Times bestseller??

"As someone who walked the halls of Revere High School with both Backderf and Dahmer and was there from the beginning, I am astounded by the accuracy and truthfulness of this portrait. I know of no other work that so clearly shows the teenage days of an American monster, long before the rest of the world heard of him. Mesmerizing."?—Mike Kukral, PhD, Revere High School class of 1978, Professor of Geography, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, author of Prague 1989: Theater of Revolution

"If you want to read a heavy story about a disturbing teenager, My Friend Dahmer will certainly quench your dark little desires. But this book is about a lot of other things that matter much, much more: the institutionalized weirdness of the suburban seventies, what it means to be friends with someone you don’t really like, a cogent explanation as to why terrible things happen, and a means for feeling sympathy toward those who don’t seem to deserve it."?—Chuck Klosterman, author of Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto?and The Visible Man

"A solid job. Putrid serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s origins are explored in this fine book. Dig it—it’ll hang you out to dry."?—James Ellroy, author of My Dark Places and L.A. Confidential

Not without flaws, but it's a reading experience you'll never forget.
By Channyn Holvey-Bates
This graphic novel certainly took me on an emotional roller coaster, which wasn't terribly shocking considering the fact that Dahmer himself and the events of his life take you on one as well. Parts of it were just riveting, others oppressively sad. Some things I liked, others not so much, particularly the parts that actually had very little to do with Dahmer. Despite its flaws, I planned on giving this a better review, but unfortunately something at the very end of the book kept me from doing so, and while the majority of my issues is with Backderf's perspective and opinions on JD as a person and not with the book itself, for me, his opinions tainted his storytelling and ought to have been omitted.

I'll start with the positives, as there are some. It's well written and a decent length. The artwork isn't the best ever but for this story it works, particularly in the drawings of Dahmer alone driving and drinking, in the woods, and in his room. The loneliness and depression that plagued Jeff his entire life was almost insidious in nature, as if something sinister latched onto him and exploited his weaknesses, and somehow Backderf really succeeds in capturing this visually in those specific moments of the book, and has a much stronger and more lasting impact than much of the written dialogue, some of which seemed pretty irrelevant to me. It only makes sense that Backderf includes some of his own individual experiences growing up, but I sort of felt they just weren't necessary. Perhaps he wanted to emphasize the stark contrast between his young life and Dahmer's, but those parts were of least interest to me.

It should certainly be noted that Backderf is EXTREMELY bold for referring to himself as Dahmer's friend, which he states frequently. He refers to some of the other oddball social outcasts as Jeffrey's "friends", which I felt was almost implying that Backderf considered himself a better friend to Jeff than them. If his and his friends' treatment of JD constitutes friendship, then I have never had any friends and nor would I want any. Some of the writing comes off as a bit pretentious and made me wonder if Backderf was merely exploiting the fact that he knew Jeff for his own personal gain, but much of that I would've been willing to overlook.

My problem lies toward the end of the book, in 20 pages of sources and information on Dahmer's life. Some of this seemed kind of bizarre to me anyway, that he would include something like this. But all of it was fine until he decides to include some of his own personal views on Dahmer, with him specifically stating that "...the only tragedy is that Dahmer didn't have the courage to put a gun to his head and end it". Obviously spoken by someone who has clearly never had suicide touch his life in any way, how fortunate for him. I lost a friend to suicide several years ago, and when something as devastating as suicide leaves some kind of stamp on your life, words like Backderf's really sting. I don't care who someone is, what crimes they've committed, and how grotesque and ghastly their crimes may be (and in this case they certainly were) - saying that about anyone is WRONG. Putting a gun to your head is neither courageous nor is it cowardly, it is what it is and it's terrible, and no one should die that way. Most people would probably say this is such an inconsequential part of the book, but I couldn't help but be bothered by it and it shouldn't have been included anyway.

It's good for a one-time read, and it'll have this surreal effect on you after you read it that just kind of lingers for a while. Some of it was very strange for me because I was raised in Akron and the places Backderf included were all too familiar to me - Summit Mall, the old Polsky's department store (the one downtown is now part of the university), and the house itself has an unsettling heaviness when you drive past it. Overall it's a great graphic novel that's worth reading. If you're like me and you're more interested in the psychology of Dahmer and Jeff as a person, I'd highly recommend The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer by Brian Masters.

Be prepared to start all over again when you finish it
By L. Robinson
I remember reading a page on the net several years ago, which was a cartoon detailing a fishing trip with Jeffrey Dahmer and a friend when they were teenagers. On this trip, young Jeff caught a sunfish and, instead of throwing it back as his friend asked, he proceeded to chop it to death with a pocket knife.

I have always remembered this, but have never found the page again.

Just this past Sunday I found out it was part of an actual book called My Friend Dahmer, written by Derf Backderf. So I checked out the Amazon Look Inside bits, and was interested enough to get a copy. It arrived Monday, and I've been through it twice since then.

It's not so much the drawing style, which is basically R Crumb, but the haunting story it tells of Dahmer before he became a serial killer, when he was a child and something might have been done for him, if the adults around him had only looked up from their own self-absorption and seen there was something terribly terribly wrong. Backderf makes no bones about his sympathy (pity, really) for Dahmer ending when Dahmer committed his first murder; however, he also draws an unflinching picture of Dahmer's loneliness, his isolation from others and from his family, and his (Backderf's) own participation in making Dahmer feel less than human.

I'm a contemporary of the kids depicted in this book -- I graduated high school in 1975, they graduated in 1978. I was an outcast, and was bullied about as badly as Dahmer. I was pretty much ignored by my parents and the teachers. But why didn't I become a serial killer? Why am I reasonably well adjusted, and have been a contributing member of society for lo, these 40 some odd years since graduation? What makes one person become an average wife/mom/worker bee, and one person the worst serial killer in recent history?

I think those are all questions that keep me turning back to this book, and that make me recommend it to all y'all out there. There are no graphic depictions of murder, death or gore -- a couple of illustrations of roadkill and one incident which shows that Dahmer, even in his descent into madness, still retained a core of humanity and kindness many "normal" people don't have. At least until he finally crossed the line and became a murderer.

Well worth the money, well worth the read.

Poorly Imagined
By L. Xue
A fun graphic novel, but not a particularly revealing portrayal of Jeffrey Dalmer. I expected more from the rave reviews this book received, but what emerges for me at the end of reading this book is a cliche:

1. a group of boys befriend a school doof.
2. Their bond is in parts sympathy and in other parts a shared complicity in the doof's amusing/humiliating/weird behavior.
3. Until, they realize he's more than a little weird; they boot him; their lives diverge, and years later...
4. Dahmer

The real point of interest here is that the weird friend did turn out to be a serial killer. That **should have been** the focus of this book. What's it like to be just one of the billions of people on earth who's had a weird, out of it friend, and then one day wake up and have that friend be a PSYCHO KILLER? What were these guys doing with their lives when they found out? What did they tell their wives? What did they fantasize about their high school selves? What did they discover about themselves? Friendship, even the most vapid, ambivalent ones are based on reciprocity and commonality. What did these normal, dorky dudes have in common with Jeffrey Dahmer after all?

"If you loved Funky Business as much as I did, you'll love Karaoke Capitalism. Weird? Most certainly. Different? Most definitely. But, if you want to re-imagine your organization and your career it's a thought-provoking place to start."

                                                                                         Tom Peters

The creators will thrive at the expense of the copycats. Express yourself.

In the long-awaited follow up to their internationally acclaimed Funky Business, Kjell Nordström and Jonas RidderstrSle have delivered a thought-provoking, workout for the wits in Karaoke Capitalism. A book that challenges individuals, businesses and nations to create originals rather than cover versions. Management guru Tom Peters said "If you loved Funky Business as much as I did, you¿ll love Karaoke Capitalism."

The karaoke economy is dominated by individuals with endless choice. The trouble for business is that the karaoke club is also home to institutionalized imitation. Copy-cats abound. Only imagination and innovation place societies, organizations and individuals center-stage.

Karaoke Capitalism is a call to arms. Kjell and Jonas are rebels with a cause. With their unorthodox combination of academic rigor, forceful logic and funky free-thinking they once again re-write the rules for revolutionaries. This is a true work-out for the wits.

The book teaches us how to successfully compete on competencies, create capitalism with character, and how to have a great life while also making a living. It is required reading for all those wanting to be a first-rate version of themselves rather than a second-rate version of someone else.

Karaoke Capitalism - create or cover?

Karaoke Capitalism is a hitchhiker¿s guide to the galaxies of business. and practice is that business schools, benchmarking and best practice have transformed the entire world of commerce into a super-group of karaoke copying companies. And imitating someone else will never get you to the top ¿ merely to the middle.

Our societies are shaped by the glorious trio of technologies, institutions and galaxies of commerce. It is a book about people ¿ management for mankind ¿ the individuals prepared to grasp the microphone and express themselves. You have the rights. Now, you must learn to live them.

The karaoke reality is a cosmopolitan club with endless individual choice but also a paltry place for institutionalized imitation. The dirty little secret of management theory values. Changes have now made abnormal the new normal. The bubble economy has given way to the double economy. Forget about appealing to the average. Success is a question of exploring the extremes.

Corporations are no longer in control. Modern companies are facing the prospects of a two-front war: held hostage by talent and under siege by consumers. The winners know that wealth is created with wisdom, but to remain competitive they are forced

to create knowledge networks that pose new and fundamentally different demands on the organization.

In a world of economic Darwinism, survival is a question of being fit or sexy ¿ competing on models and moods. Fitness boils down to using market imperfections to your advantage. Masters of mood exploit the imperfections of man by seducing or sedating consumer. Excellent companies re-invent innovation and re-energize the corporation.

To develop the character of capitalism we have to accept individual responsibility. Look inside. Do you want to be a first-rate version of yourself or a second-rate version of someone else?

Individualism knows neither immitations nor limitations !!!
By Franco Arda
Again, a wonderful written business book from those two super authors. While the book title might be a bit misleading, it's all about INDIVIDUALITY. It's about experiencing and expressing our individuality in life (mostly through the context of business). Business if floaded with copy-cats. This book is a manifesto against copy-cat business (or karaoke capitalism).

Understanding this is like understanding outsourcing. Executives used to believe that 2+2=5. Now it is 5-2=7 because the more non-core activities you place outside the firm the higher the value you can generate. Funky :-)

Europe Premier Business Thinker write again after FUNKY BUSINESS
By T SANTOSO
I love the writers' different "accent" in the writings, and if you are bored with the many similarity among American Gurus' writing, try this one.

Funky Business is thier first book and i love the book very much. This long awaited sequel has been in Asia ( i bought in spore twice) for sometime and i strangely could not find it in Amazon (untill i check today).... and why it is listed for 50USD is beyond me. (Should be about 15 USD for the soft cover).

The book has nothing to do with Karaoke (singing to the tune of music which is popular in Asia), and this is about business, the rise of the individual, and a host of other things.

I am biased, I love Tom Peters, Seth Godin, and both writers of this book.

The land of the free
By KYMitch
Only four reviews of this remarkable book (with mine). Strikes me as strange that no other Americans have reacted to it. I suppose that says something. It confirmed for me more than it revealed, but for that I'm also grateful. If it's a premise you can understand and follow, it's a gratifying read.

Get this book while you can
By daibhidh
I ran across this book when I was 17; it spooked me then. I decided to pick it up again and see how far we've come, and I am amazed at how on the mark Bertram Gross was in his analysis of elite control of America.
These days, even reading a book like this likely gets you branded a "conspiracy theorist" but Gross points out several times he's not referring to conspiracies -- the Big Government/Big Business combine that is the fueling engine of fascism is alive and well. Indeed, stronger than ever in this country.
This book is a deep, frightening account of elite power structures in America. Friendly fascism is fascism with a friendly face -- not so much jackboots, mass rallies, and so forth that comprise the popular stereotype of fascism, but rather an insidious, public-relations savvy manipulation of power for profit.
What impresses me most is how thorough and cogent Gross's analysis is, and I am sad more people haven't read this book. While it came out in 1980, anybody who is politically aware today will see that, rather than being dated, Gross was definitely ahead of his time in his thinking. This is a big book (@400 pages), and densely packed with information, but it is definitely worth your time.

Prophetic Book Considers Effects Of Rise Of The Power Elite!
By Barron Laycock
I lost my trusty old `dogged-eared' copy of this wonderful classic in a house fire a couple of years ago, and only recently found a used hardcover copy at the wonderful independent bookstore in Peterborough; The Toadstool Bookstore. Considering how relevant the book is to events transpiring in this country now, it was a fortuitous discovery. This is a relatively short but extremely cogent and well-argued treatise on the rise of a form of fascistic thought and social politics in late 20th century America. Author Bertram Gross' thesis is quite straightforward; the power elite that comprises the corporate, governmental and military superstructure of the country is increasingly inclined to employ every element in their formidable arsenal of `friendly persuasion' to win the hearts and minds of ordinary Americans through what Gross refers to as "friendly fascism".

For anyone familiar with modern social theory, it is apparent that the author's thesis is a quite clever and accurate extension of sociologist C. Wright Mills' well known notions of what came to be known as the `mass society' theory. This was an essential aspect of Mills' famous theory of the power elite as forwarded in a book with the same title. Like social theorist G. William Domhoff ("The Higher Circles"), Professor Gross shows how the deceptively friendly and engaging style of the powers that be actually constitute an increasingly dangerous threat to the democratic process and to the long-term survival of our precious civil liberties. Of course, for Americans used to the association between the term `fascism' and the image of angry totalitarian states such as Nazi Germany and the Italy of the same period of time, it is perhaps difficult to associate with the notion that clever and systematic manipulation of the general population through use of the mass media is a form of fascistic influence. Yet, as Gross argues so persuasively, that is exactly what it is.

The term that pops to mind is that process that M.I.T. scholar Noam Chomsky would refer to as "manufacturing consent", a dangerous propensity which dangerously influences the perceptions of individual citizens by continually immersing the populace in an electronic stream of messages, both blatant and subliminal, that serves to condition them to a particular way of experiencing, participating, and perceiving the world around them. We find ourselves constantly bombarded by powerful and suggestive images, message-laden icons which deliver consistent themes regarding the nature of the environment we are living in, one we come to employ more and more exclusively as our preferred method of interacting in both the civil and legal aspects of contemporary society.

As Professor Gross so prophetically forecasted, the mergers of all commercial news sources, both electronic and other, have come under the ownership and control of corporate America, one of the leading edges of the power elite. Amazingly, all of this also rings a responsive chord with the single most prophetic work of fiction in the 20th century, Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World". Lost in our petty diversions and self-absorbed in a pool of trivial pursuits, we become increasingly more vulnerable to the solid wall of subliminal and other messages all conveying a message regarding he nature of the world and our social, economic, and political place in it.

As our experience with the several successful Presidents ranging from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, the artful use of personal charisma to cover a mean-spirited political agenda has worked amazingly well. In the twenty years since the book was originally published, many aspects of our collective socioeconomic well-being have been profoundly changed, almost exclusively to the favor of the rich and well placed and to the increasing detriment of the average man and woman on the street. The statistics available are overwhelming in detailing the levels to which ordinary citizens have been stripped of most of the socioeconomic gains of the last century. In every area of contemporary life, from the cost and extent of health coverage to the responsibility for a variety of aspects such as providing for individual retirements, the vastly expanding future tax liability, and the use of the federal treasury to provide for subsidies to corporate America, the story is the same.

Increasingly we are being manipulated into surrendering our voice in the democratic process and to playing a more limited role as consumers, which the elite evidently sees as our only crucial civic responsibility. As George W. Bush said with a booming voice and a congenial charismatic smile, post 911 Americans just had to get out to do their patriotic duty by once again buying things, to get the economy going once more. Indeed, it is becoming a brave new world. This is a wonderful book, and one that is a great, thought-provoking read. Enjoy!

This book is one of the best books on elite corruption.
By A Customer
Friendly Fascism, by Bertram Gross, is an excellent, gripping, knowledgeable and illuminating book by a man who served as an insider in the system (the White House) and evolved to the point that he felt the system itself was the problem, and both needed exposing (as to its anatomy and tactics, never discussed publically in the mass media or in our educational institutions) and its need for change. His book was a warning as to the seeds of a new brand of fascism he clearly saw evolving in this country (written during the Reagan administration), which was also warned against, prophetically, in Romano Guardini's early books, The End of the Modern World, The World and the Person, Power and Responsibility, Letters from Lake Como, and The Virtues (some of which are still out of print). He brilliantly analyzes the hierarchy of the system, where real power lies, how it is maintained, the role of the public in all this, perhaps - most importantly - the issue of wealth and control of information. When I read this book I felt great joy - because he succeeded in getting it into print and because what he had to say was so desperately needed. I even feel this more strongly now - my only complaint is that what he said was beginning was, I feel, understated - it has evolved and progressed farther than that and many of his warnings (as surveillance) are now "accepted" ways of conducting high-level business, are, in fact, the foundation of it in many ways. Whole industries (as mass media) are becoming built upon this, hidden behind Gross's brilliant explanation of "triple speak" (truth, only whispered at elite gatherings, myth, and jargon - the latter two fed to the public to confuse and distract.) It is an exciting, brilliant and very necessary book, right on the mark, and highly recommended.

ADHD Nation: Children, Doctors, Big Pharma, and the Making of an American Epidemic, by Alan Schwarz

The groundbreaking and definitive account of the widespread misdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—and how its unchecked growth over half a century has made ADHD one of the most controversial conditions in medicine, with serious effects on children, adults, and society.

More than 1 in 7 American children get diagnosed with ADHD—three times what experts have said is appropriate—meaning that millions of kids are misdiagnosed and taking medications such as Adderall or Concerta for a psychiatric condition they probably do not have. The numbers rise every year. And still, many experts and drug companies deny any cause for concern. In fact, they say that adults and the rest of the world should embrace ADHD and that its medications will transform their lives.

In ADHD Nation, Alan Schwarz examines the roots and the rise of this cultural and medical phenomenon: The father of ADHD, Dr. Keith Conners, spends fifty years advocating drugs like Ritalin before realizing his role in what he now calls “a national disaster of dangerous proportions”; a troubled young girl and a studious teenage boy get entangled in the growing ADHD machine and take medications that backfire horribly; and big Pharma egregiously over-promotes the disorder and earns billions from the mishandling of children (and now adults).

While demonstrating that ADHD is real and can be medicated when appropriate, Schwarz sounds a long-overdue alarm and urges America to address this growing national health crisis.

Review
"An illuminating exploration of ADHD, brimming with intelligence and insight. Schwarz reveals the powerful cultural and economic forces fueling its widespread diagnosis and drug treatment. Those with the disorder will hear a voice of compassion. And those who may be misdiagnosed, a clarion note of caution."
—Jerome Groopman, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, staff writer, New Yorker

“ADHD Nation is a true rarity – a book that confronts an important subject with the authority of an expert, makes its case with the urgency of a red alert, and moves at the pace of a thriller."
—Daniel Okrent, New York Times bestselling author of Last Call

"In this powerful, necessary book, Schwarz exposes the dirty secrets of the growing ADHD epidemic."
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"ADHD Nation should be required reading for those who seek to understand how a field that once aimed to ameliorate the behavioral problems of children in a broad therapeutic context abdicated its mission to the stockholders of corporations like Shire and Lilly. Schwarz is sounding an alarm for a fire that looks nowhere near abating."
—The New York Times Book Review

"This eye-opening book should be a hit with drug-industry skeptics and worried parents who want to read a well-reported, definitive guide to this misunderstood and overly medicated disorder."
—Booklist

"Mr. Schwarz’s disciplined focus gives his book clarity and even utility."
—The Wall Street Journal

"ADHD Nation is a necessary book. Schwarz has done a fine job on a maddening topic, and everyone who’s interested in hyperactivity, attention spans, stimulants, and the current state of American health care should grab a copy."
—New York Magazine

"A dazzling piece of journalism, based on extensive research and an enormous number of interviews...an outstanding exposé."
—New Republic

"[Schwarz's] nimble investigation interweaves the narratives of pharmaceutical companies with those of child psychologist Keith Conners, who led ADHD's 'Manhattan Project', and young people grappling with the medical fallout. An intriguing sidelight is the misuse of ADHD drugs as performance enhancers."
—Nature

The author does a good job explaining the problem at a macro level
By Daniel W Weinstein
Interesting read. I knew a little about how ADHD med use was high, but I had no idea how pervasive a problem it has become. The author does a good job explaining the problem at a macro level, while using individual stories to drive it home. Anyone with kids should read this.

Elements of Econometrics: Second Edition, by Jan Kmenta

This classic text has proven its worth in university classrooms and as a tool kit in research--selling over 40,000 copies in the United States and abroad in its first edition alone. Users have included undergraduate and graduate students of economics and business, and students and researchers in political science, sociology, and other fields where regression models and their extensions are relevant. The book has also served as a handy reference in the "real world" for people who need a clear and accurate explanation of techniques that are used in empirical research.
Throughout the book the emphasis is on simplification whenever possible, assuming the readers know college algebra and basic calculus. Jan Kmenta explains all methods within the simplest framework, and generalizations are presented as logical extensions of simple cases. And while a relatively high degree of rigor is preserved, every conflict between rigor and clarity is resolved in favor of the latter. Apart from its clear exposition, the book's strength lies in emphasizing the basic ideas rather than just presenting formulas to learn and rules to apply.
The book consists of two parts, which could be considered jointly or separately. Part one covers the basic elements of the theory of statistics and provides readers with a good understanding of the process of scientific generalization from incomplete information. Part two contains a thorough exposition of all basic econometric methods and includes some of the more recent developments in several areas.
As a textbook, Elements of Econometrics is intended for upper-level undergraduate and master's degree courses and may usefully serve as a supplement for traditional Ph.D. courses in econometrics. Researchers in the social sciences will find it an invaluable reference tool.
A solutions manual is also available for teachers who adopt the text for coursework.
Jan Kmenta is Professor Emeritus of Economics and Statistics, University of Michigan.

An excellent reference but a very difficult read
By not a natural
I did an independent study in econometrics as a doctoral student in educational policy studies, and some of the readings were taken from the first edition of Kmenta's Elements of Econometrics. At the time, I recognized that Kmenta's text was long and difficult, but it was also clear that some topics that were simply unreadable in other econometric accounts, especially Jack Johnston's Econometric Methods, were presented with greater clarity and less mathematical density by Kmenta. For me, the fact that most of Kmenta's account did not require a working knowledge of matrix algebra was a definite plus.

That was thirty years ago, and I have since bought a copy of the second edition of Kmenta's book. No less demanding than the first edition, Kmenta's updated text remains comprehensive and wonderfully informative. As with the first edition, moreover, the second edition avoids undue reliance on matrix algebra.

I have learned, however, that for my purposes this book serves best as a reference. When I was having trouble understanding maximum likelihood methods for the estimation of regression coefficients, I turned to Kmenta and found an accessible explanation, as well as a graphical account that brought the notion of maximum likelihood to life, making it seem almost commonsensical. Similarly, when I struggled to learn why procedures such as tobit were useful as an antidote to certain forms of sample selection bias, I turned to Kemnta and found what I needed. This included a clearer understanding of just what sample selection bias means in this context.

I have read substantial chunks of Kmenta's book, but I doubt that I will ever sit down and undertake the daunting task of reading it from start to finish. Nevertheless, Kmenta's second edition occupies a conspicuous and important place on my book shelf precisely because it serves so usefully as a reference. For those of us who are often forced to work on or just beyond the borders of our readily available statistical knowledge, this text is well worth the price.

As an afterthought, I was recently gratified when Kmenta gave a very mixed, not particularly flattering review to Angrist and Pische's Mostly Harmless Econometrics. The title of the book is misleading, as is the subtitle ("An Empiricist's Companion"), inviting the reader to surmise that it is a general introduction to econometrics. As Kmenta makes clear in his review, this is definitely not the case. The book presupposes a good deal of econometric knowledge, and is narrowly focused on the work of labor economists. Kmenta also takes issue with some technical details.

Walks through proofs of basic concepts
By (d)avid
Previewing textbooks to teach my political science graduate students, I have noticed that econometrics textbooks generally fall into two broad categories:
1) Basic introductions that rely more heavily on examples than proofs
2) Books on advanced topics that provide proofs.

There are very few texts that provide proofs of basic econometric techniques. Kmenta's Elements of Econometrics is one of those few books. In roughly 700 pages, it provides a thorough introduction to linear regression and supports this introduction with exceptionally clear proofs. The book is far from exhaustive in the topics it covers and there are texts with better examples, but you will be hard pressed to find a text with a better presentation of the proofs underlying these foundational building blocks.

A Classic.
By PruneCandy
I had the fortune of taking two undergraduate statistics courses under Professor Kmenta just prior to his retirement at the University of Michigan. The first was a standard introductory statistics course for economics majors, the second a more advanced class for honors students. Of course, this was the text assigned for those courses.

Since then, I have read other Statistics textbooks, and few, if any, will provide you with a more fundamental understanding of what statistics is and how it works than "Elements of Econometrics".

As other reviewers have noted, this textbook may not be the best introduction to statistics for people without a solid mathematical background. But even if your mathematical skills are on the rusty side, if you are willing to put forth the effort, I think that you will find yourself well rewarded with a more profound knowledge of statistics than you will find elsewhere. If on the other hand, you are looking for a quick primer on how to do simple regressions, for example, then you may be better off looking elsewhere.

The flesh of the orchid, by James Hadley Chase

James Hadley Chase (René Brabazon Raymond) was born in London in 1906 and started his career as a bookseller. With the aid of a dictionary of American slang and reference books on the American underworld he wrote his first novel, NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH, over six weekends. The book achieved remarkable popularity and became one of the best-sold books of the decade. FLESH OF THE ORCHID is a wild, thrill-ride of a sequel to NO ORCHIDS. Taking up the story 22 years later, the central figure is once again a Blandish girl, but Carol Blandish is not the helpless victim that her mother was. Indeed, she is a volatile blend of simmering sexuality, strained innocence and hair-trigger cruelty. Her explosive outbursts of savage violence make her a force to be reckoned with. Escaping from a mental institute during a raging storm, and definitely off her meds, Carol Blandish is soon pursued by a seedy cast of characters who all want a piece of the Blandish fortune. The novel bristles with crazy plot twists, edge-of-the-seat suspense and intriguing low-life's who mix it up for an immensely enjoyable read.

What Could Possibly Happen When A Beautiful Escapee From A Mental Institution Runs Into Two Hit Men
By Dave Wilde
Carol Blandish is a violent maniac locked up in a sanitarium, screaming for endless hours. She is also the heir to her grandfather's $6 million dollar fortune, has brilliant red hair, and a traffic-stopping figure. What happens when she breaks out of the sanitarium? What man could resist giving her a ride? What happens when her path crosses that of a man on the run from the Mob's two deadliest contract killers, the Sullivan brothers? And what about the fact that half the County wants to capture her and take control of her money?

This is a terrific thriller by James Hadley Chase that is a crime story, a love story, a tale of brotherly togetherness, and filled with retired circus performers, fortune hunters, and the like. It is solidly written and just filled with action and fights and gun battles. Great fun to read.

I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots
By Amazon Customer
Although I found too many coincidences in the story, for instance how the characters in a far-away city just keep running into each other, end up in the same hospital, meet tragedy on the same street at the same time, mysteriously end up in the same locations at the same time, in three situations meet coincidentally in the same hotel over and over again, I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots.
