Great Book for What It Does

I have read a lot of criticism of this book in online reviews. Most of them complain that this is not what the reader expected or the psychology was a basic intro level. To that I have one response:

If it never occurred to you to actually research the book before you bought it, then this is the wrong type of book for you.

As for the book itself, it is more than a mere "intro to psychology" . The author does evaluate Batman, to an extent. He explains the emotional and psychological differences of Batman at different point of his existence, from his very beginning as a mere comic book detective to his campy turn at a 1960's TV icon through the torrential movies of the 1990s, his various cartoon incarnations and arriving at the Christopher Nolan films.

Along the way we get small psychological briefs on various members of Batman's rouges gallery and even discuss how different love interests have influenced his emotional state.

It was a fascinating read for me and should only be considered by those looking for something along the lines of a psychological biography and not a "hero beats up the villain" story.

This Book is ...AMAZING

When I first picked this up I thought that it would just be an interesting way to pass a day or two. I've had a few college courses in psychology and thought it'd be neat to read about mental disorders in Batman's universe. This book is so much more than that. This could literally be the foundation of the most interesting college class EVER. Langley does a fantastic job of detailing various mental disorders and motivations not just in the Batman universe but also in the real world. The real pleasure in reading this book is that it's not just comic books and pop psychology but a primer for understanding real mental issues, and why some people are the way they are. It also explains why Batman only works inside of the universe he's in. The book is excellent.

An exceptional observation with modern psychology into Batman.

The book covers Batman. This includes all the way from the original 1939 comic to Adam West in the sixties to the The
Dark Knight Rises in 2012. If you are not familiar with academic psychology like Freud, Erikson, etc. then be prepared to learn. The book goes in depth into Batman's origins, his reasons for fighting criminals, and his many of most popular enemies using modern psychology methonds. The majority of the book is excellent and a very good read for even the Bat fans who have only seen the recent movies. The downsides are when the book gets heavy into the psychology referring different theories for the many psych gurus. Overall a read well worth the money even if there are some pretty heavy points.

This book was the biggest help to my retroactive jealousy problems.

This book described me and my experiences perfectly, what I felt, how I thought, how my mind worked, everything. It was such a big help to read this book, and I look forward to what the future has in store for me. I only wish I had found this book sooner. I still have work to do, but I like that. I like that this book encourages my mind to work on getting better, if you will. As I've learned from reading this, the mind does enjoy a challenge. The exercises in this book are great for that. So in that regard I really like that this book leaves me with the keys to continue progressing toward a happier me, that I used to be.
I would recommend this book to, well, probably everyone. Dealing with this problem, never had this problem, married, single, cats or dogs? The reason I say that is reading this book will benefit you in some way. Weather your like me and you needed help like this for a couple months now, or your worried the past talk might pop up unexpectedly and you want to prepare yourself. This book is going to help you. Obviously by reading the title we all know who this book targets, people like me, who have a problem and need help. But I view this book to be a healthy decision, a cleanse if you will, for anyone.
I gave this book 5 stars for a number of reasons.
1. I am exactly the person who needed to read this, and it sure was helpful.
2. It was extremely well written, by that I mean it wasn't boring, it wasn't too short, it covered all the bases but it wasn't too long either, and it didn't run on like this sentence.
3. The author implemented the right amount of humor too, witch caught my attention and made the book easier to read.
4. The author wrote this with his own personal experience of retroactive jealousy in mind. That was a huge help to hear about someone else out there just like me. And not to mention inspiring that you can In fact get better from this.
5. This book leaves you with the right tools to fix the issue. This book doesn't just end, it doesn't just stop. It recommends you try a couple different things after the book. Homework if you will. I personally like that, because not only did I take from the book a great message and new knowledge of myself, I also get to take from this book how to continue to better myself. How to continue to make progress in my relationship.

If your hung up on your partners past, it's causing you problems, hard to take, mixed thoughts or emotions, your not quite yourself, buy this book. Do not wait. The quicker you read this book the better you AND your partner will be. Take my word for it.

I bought this first and now will be buying something to replace it, you should buy something else.

Seems like it's been rewritten so much that it's no longer cohesive. Chapter 5's discussion of proxy servers leaves out web filtering which for some unknown reason then ends up under the heading "Encryption Devices." This is presented in terms of format, as the same level of content as "Proxy Servers," and "Analog Modem," which follows immediately after. To make matters even more confusing, the book isn't even internally consistent... at the end of the chapter, not one, but two questions regarding web filtering are asked, both with the answer "Proxy Server." Having been in the industry for 10 years I was surprised when he didn't talk about web filtering proxies in the proxy "section," but figured he would pick it up later as a specialized device and explain that it was a kind of proxy, given that this is a basic course in networking, but he didn't.

The book improves as you move farther into the content, but I can say you'd probably be better off spending your money on a different book. There's plenty of good information here, but it's jumbled, (particularly in the early chapters) by countless attempts to keep an old framework up to date.

Here's how this rewriting manifests itself most of the time. "Here's technology X. It works by"... goes into 3 1/2 detailed paragraph about technology and then goes on to say "but, never mind that, it's old and really not important and no one uses it anymore!" Another stellar spot is figure 12.7 (ca 2007) which is titled "Range comparisons of 802.11 standards." This includes 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. Nowhere in the graph is 802.11n or 802.11ac, but not to worry, he makes up for this by tacking on "802.11n gives more distance than all three standards shown in the figure (up to twice as much), and understand 802.11ac just won't give you more distance than 802.11n."

The book is also very focused on Cisco products, which is fine, but sometimes Cisco proprietary protocols are not listed as Cisco, for instance, VTP. The book gives a full page to the protocol without ever mentioning that it's Cisco only and as a result, fails to mention any strategies for achieving the same goals in non-Cisco networks.

I'll be buying a different book now, as this has become too annoying to read any further into.

Not bad. Needs improvement.

In short I passed (I have prior network knowledge that helped also) but there are a few problems with the material that should be mentioned.
Some of the study questions don't give the correct answer (e.g. which of these is NOT a PUBLIC ip address? and 3 of the answers are private IP addresses with the only public ip address being the desired answer). Not a big deal to someone that has a strong understanding of the material from prior knowledge but a new network person might be mislead.
He also teaches that ipsec is tunneling protocol which is not true. Ipsec often works with tunneling protocols to offer security that they lack but is not in and of itself a tunneling protocol( see sybex comptia security + study guide by Emmett Dulaney pg 91). Again, a small detail but what if this misinformation is the last bit that leads an individual to fail the exam?
My final complaint is that the book felt loaded in some chapters. I think it could be beneficial to break up some of the chapters a bit more in order to offer a new learner a more defined line between the topics so they aren't left with 50 pages of new material and trying to understand how they are going to compartmentalize this information in a logical way.

Hi, I have seen many technical books that are as complex as this one and I find this text book is the most confusing I ever encountered. I have two masters and a doctoral degree. Here are my problems with the book. It covers many technical concepts and terms. The Exam Essentials, then, are supposed to reflect what is covered on the exams. Yet the terminology on exam essentials is not consistent with the text at times. Furthermore, we bought the practice tests from CertBlaster the most reputable sample tests website, and the exam questions are not even covered in Exam essentials in the text book. Unless you learn cover-to-cover which is absolutely impossible, there is no way to pass the test.
