About the Author

Joseph A. Edminister is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, where he also served as an assistant dean and acting dean of engineering. Edminister is a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio, a member of the bar in Ohio, and a registered patent attorney. He is also the author of Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Electromagnetics.

Mahmood Nahvi, PhD, is a professor of electrical engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Dr. Nahvi’s areas of special interest and expertise include network theory, control theory, communications engineering, signal processing, neural networks, adaptive control and learning in synthetic and living systems, communication and control in the central nervous system, and engineering education. In the area of engineering education, he has developed computer modules for electric circuits, signals, and systems which improve teaching and learning of the fundamentals of electrical engineering.

This is not for ece students trying to learn circuit ...

This is not for ece students trying to learn circuit analysis. For that purpose, get basic circuit analysis by the same series. This is an overall reference book for filling in all the stuff about capacitors, resistors, and amplifiers and stuff your professor skipped over in your second or third year of ece. First year ece at my college doesn't really go over much more than basic c++programming and series/parallel circuit analysis.

A little more difficult than what i would say a fundamental level truly is, but after a couple semesters of class, this book was great help once i understood the fundaments themselves. Just keep in mind if you just started, it may be difficult to comprehend and i would look elsewhere to help you through fundamental.

The book is great for someone who has already had some form of basic circuits. This is not a book to start with to grasp concepts. Not that the book is bad in any way, it is just not one to start with when trying to get the basics.

Acoustic Artistry

I have been playing for 13 years, and this book takes you to places you normally would not go. It is very gradient in the way in which you learn the techniques and advances in a way which is comfortable yet challenging. If you are up to try something different from what is "normal" for acoustic guitar this book is for you. It adds a wow factor to your playing in which you and your audience will appreciate . i highly recommend it as it is where solo guitar is going.

Beyond the standard guitar techniques.

This book extends the classical/fingerstyle techniques and does so extremely well. I do not know of any other publication that covers this material. The studies start off simple and increase in difficulty as you progress through the text. The included CD is extremely helpful in that you can hear exactly the tonality that the author is seeking. You cannot beat the price, which is very inexpensive. Evan Hirshelman is an outstanding performer, composer, and teacher...if you have the opportunity to see him in concert or attend a masterclass, you'll be impressed. He has a deep passion for the guitar and he is one of the few current composers for classical guitar whose pieces are fresh, modern, and at the same time musical (check out his CD "Water in Darkness" ). I highly recommend this book to classical guitarists or fingerstyle guitarists who wish to extend their technique beyond that commonly found in standard guitar methods and classrooms.

Boring

Not for me. I could not immerse myself in the events taking place, and I could not connect with 14 year old Alice. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the mood I was in, or the state of mind I had while reading it, but for whatever reason this book fell really short of what my expectations were.

When rumors of the plague start emerging, Alice finds herself in constant fear of getting the disease. As the death tolls are mounting, Alice can barely leave the house, until her own Aunt Nell falls sick. Alice remains in the house with her aunt, caring for her as much as she could, hoping she doesn't catch the disease herself, while her father is locked out elsewhere, not allowed to leave due to the disease as well.

When her Aunt Nell dies, having not made it, Alice is completely alone in this world. Once pronounced safe to leave their houses, Alice packs and leaves in the hopes she could get to her Uncle's village outside of London, only she (along with many others) are turned back and now allowed to cross. Alice is kind of relieved to be going back to her own home, even though she had almost starved from lack of food earlier.

She finally finds herself reunited with her father, and we end the book with the huge London fire.

It may have been the events, or the way Alice wrote her story, but this book didn't do it for me. Not one bit.I found it very boring and uninteresting.

Accountability

This book provides a basis for accountability in making trades as you do. I found the psychological part the best. It is somewhat hard to implement the basic structure required by the author for me personally. However it all rings truth in it's wording. This is a work book and therefore leads the reader through a series of questions to let you know how good you understand the basic fundamentals prescribed of his book "Trading For A Living".

It has increased awareness and led me to stop making the same repetitive mistakes. And that is the basis for success in trading.

It could help some people

What is your learning style? If you don't trust that you know something until you've taken a test, this book can help. It does an excellent job of pulling out the key topics and quizzing you on them. There are no 'silly' questions here--only the important stuff. On the other hand, if you like to read and underline, then return to the text when you are actually 'doing' the activity, then this book is probably a waste of money. One nit complaint: some of the labeling of chart features is a bit unclear. Since it is sometimes tough to tell which letter goes with which feature, answering some questions is difficult, even when you know the material.

This book was inspired by an event that took place in the summer of my life as a soccer coach and dad. My family and I showed up to the soccer field where my five-year-old son was going to play, and as the two previous teams finished up. As our boys gathered, some helpful parents from the already playing teams pointed out a large pile of Dog Poop on the field, and warned us to point it out to our boys. A few moments later, the coaches of the departing teams also pointed out the poop, and gave us the same admonition. Next came the referees assigned to the field for the evening, who told us the same thing!

After this third warning, my son’s other coach and I looked at each other and, without saying a word, turned and went to separate trash cans on the field in search of something we could use to scoop up the poop. We found a large piece of cardboard, and had it cleaned off the field in less than a minute.

I still remember some of the dumbfounded and bewildered expressions of the "Adults" who had so helpfully pointed it out – but who, apparently, had never considered actually cleaning it up! As I viewed all the parents that lined the field, and pondered all the parents and coaches who had been there throughout the day – each one dutifully and diligently passing along the "Poop Warning" – I marveled that NONE had taken the initiative to clean it UP! What an opportunity to teach, by example, the important principles of service, teamwork, selflessness, and INITIATIVE. In my mind’s eye I could envision each of these adults ten to fifteen years in the future, lamenting how their own teenagers don’t take initiative nor even understand what it is! Sadly, I would guess that even then, it will not occur to these "pointing parents" that a large portion of what their teenagers don’t do is a direct result of never having seen their parents do it. My rough calculations put the estimate at a potential 220 plus Adult Poop Pointers – and only 2 Poop Scoopers! With the Initiative Bar so low, those of us who are willing to take it end up looking like high jumpers. Kirk, Thank you again for your call a few weeks back. We have received everything and have already started working with all of our Managers and Supervisors. I will be running seminars in December. I have also received Purple Cow and The Big Moo. I have just started Purple Cow but am hoping to get deeper into it soon. Here is my story: Two weeks ago we had a large rain storm move through Seattle (shocking, I know!). With it being Fall, the leaves were dropping like crazy and they had clogged the drain in our parking lot. There was a huge pond in the main parking lot. I watched as one, two, three people came walking in our building with their pants wet up to their shins. I had personally walked around the pond when I came into work, assuming that maintenance would take care of it. Finally, I was walking to the bathroom when a woman came in the building, soaking wet from mid shin down. She gave me this deadly stare, pointed at me, and snarled, Can someone put up some cones in the parking lot! I just got soaking wet because I had to walk through a puddle! Inside I laughed because she could have walked around the pond but chose to continue through it without doing a thing about it. I sat at my desk and thought, This is a PERFECT pile of POOP! I went down the back stairs, grabbed a large broom, walked out to the puddle, took off my shoes and socks, rolled my pants up, and then made my way to the drain. There were so many leaves in the drain that the broom was worthless. I then reached in with my hands and proceeded to scrap the leaves out. It took me about 15 seconds and the pond was gone in about one minute. I walked back in the office, barefooted and all, and the POOP was gone. I thought you would enjoy a good old genuine POOP story! Rajan Suri is Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Dr. Suri serves as Director of the Center for Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM), a consortium of over 40 firms working with the university on understanding and implementing QRM strategies. He is internationally regarded as an expert on the analysis of manufacturing systems, specializing in lead time reduction and time-based competitiveness. Dr. Suri is author of over 100 technical publications and has chaired three international conferences on manufacturing systems.

Dr. Suri has consulted for leading firms, including 3M, Alcoa, AT&T, Ford, General Motors, McDonnell-Douglas, and Xerox. He received a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, England, and a Master's and Ph.D. in Engineering from Harvard University.

Cut the lead time and make more money! Simple.

I purchased this based on the recommendation of one of the Black Belts from a smaller plant at my company. He has been successfully implementing these procedures for quite a few months now, and has shown some significant results. I'm impressed, and I think Dr. Suri is on the right path with this. Though it is somewhat dismissive of Lean / Six Sigma as methodologies, I do see them as complimentary to QRM, along with ToC and other methods. It's all about taking the best aspects of each and employing them in a successful manner.

Pros:
- Covers not only the manufacturing side (the plant), but goes into detail on the office as well, where we find significant lead time created in the processes
- Works extremely well in a job shop environment. We're largely high variation, low volume products, almost one-off in most cases, and QRM provides an excellent fit.
- The discussions of the response time spiral are spot on. We fall victim to this constantly. It's all about creating flexible environments focused on delivering proper value (sounds a bit like Lean, eh?)

Cons:
- Too much negative commentary on "competing" methodologies, where any of us with some experience realize that each has its good and bad, and to not trust the salesmen of any one method

Overall, it's an excellent book, though a dry and academic read, and should be seriously investigated by any manufacturing manager, operations person, quality, or continuous improvement implementer.

Focuses on today's manufacturing climate

As a former manager of strategic planning, now returned to the manufacturing side, I consider this book to be one of the most important I have read over the past several years. What I am seeing in manufacturing is that the cookie cutter products, high tech or not, are moving to either Asia or Mexico. The remaining products are being sold to customers who require a high level of customization on a very short lead time. The author has developed a system to accomplish this. He focuses not just on the nuts and bolts of the shop floor, but also on streamlining the support systems needed to achieve this level of service. If you are in high level manufacturing or corporate management, you need to read this book. If you are at a lower level, you will still be exposed to many ideas which you can incorporate into improving your service, to both internal and external customers, and reducing your lead times. I think it ranks right up there with The Goal as one of the most important business books written in the era of modern manufacturing.

Wonderful page turner, a great look at a Mother's love!

I absolutely loved this book and disagree with other reviews that suggest Ellen should have simply called the birth parents and tried to work something out with them. That would likely never happened with the exception of a brief period of transition. This book portrayed a mother's love regardless of how you became a parent. Not only that, it had you asking yourself, would you, could you, make that call? There is a real emotional pull between doing what is right and NEVER wanting to give away your own child. I think that the way she goes about finding out the truth is a very real look at not wanting to show all your cards until you absolutely have to. Her reasons weren't completely selfish either, she clearly had the best interest of her child at heart or else she would have taken the advice of those telling her to just forget it. She knew it would haunt her always. Then you have to consider the fiction angle of a great writer. We wouldn't read the book if the story was sweet and simple and it wouldn't be a page turner without the drama and suspense of Ellen working the story through to find the truth and even when you think the truth is not in her favor, you are surprised to find you can't put this book down until you know the "truth". To me this book was so good, it stayed with me. I found I couldn't simply finish the book and move on to my next book. It was an emotional journey that had me just needing to take it all in and ask myself what I would do in the characters position's. My husband wouldn't even have to conversation with me when I tried to ask him what he or we would do. Just an impossible situation to ever have to consider. Loved it! Loved it!

Fantastic read..could not put it down!

Loved this book...was hooked from the first page although the story went places that I hadn't anticipated. Very thrilling! The main characters were believable and , as a mother, I so related to the conflict that Ellen experienced about her son. Nicely done!! Will definitely read more books by Scottoline!

More than her usual superb thriller

I think Lisa Scottoline is one of the top 10 mystery/suspense writers out there. She spends a great deal of time fleshing out her core characters so they feel real and we believe their choices. And her plot lines are always well researched and filled with twists and turns.

But this book took us to new places. It forces the reader to ask and ponder some incredibly difficult ethical questions as we journey through the mystery with Ellen, the main character. In this book, we don't just want to know who did it...but we want to know what Ellen is going to do. And ultimately, we wonder what we would do.

The emotions are very raw and real. There are parts that are a tough read if you're a parent. But in the end, as she always does, Scottoline leaves you sitting back...a bit dazed from the wild ride.

Great read. I would not start it if you have pressing matters you must attend to. It's a tough one to put down.

A major figure in the study of life and mind

Lilly was one of the greatest scientists and pioneers on the limits of human possibility of modern times but after his death a collective amnesia has descended and his is now almost forgotten.

Lilly was a generation (or more) ahead of his time. He is almost single-handedly responsible for the great interest in dolphins (which led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act in the USA and helped to found the animal rights movement). In 1958 he noted that the brains of elephants and cetaceans were larger than ours, that we should not abuse them and that it was one our most important projects to communicate with them. He invented sensory isolation tanks (at NIMH in 1954) and used them extensively with and without powerful psychoactive drugs at a time when it was thought that either the brain would shut down or one would go insane if external stimuli were eliminated.

He created methods for implanting electrodes in mammal brains and was planning to do it to himself. He was one of the first to make serious use of computers in bioscience research and created the hardware and software to make the first attempts to communicate with dolphins. He self experimented with dangerous physiological investigations in high altitude medicine for the military during WW2, took LSD with dolphins and movie stars, submitted himself to the rigors of Arica training, and taught classes at Esalen.

He was the first one to investigate the bizarre psychedelic ketamine, and his results (published in the two last chapters of his book `The Scientist`) are still the best data on the dose/effect relation of any psychedelic on one person. And all this happened before most of us were born!

He had courage, honesty and integrity that is rare anywhere and almost nonexistent in science. His goal was to find the ultimate truth about everything and he went about as far as anyone ever has. He had little patience with the stupid and hypocritical games one has to play to fit into monkey society. Of course the reaction of the establishment was predictable. He left the NIMH and was never given any government or academic support for the last 35 years of his life. His paper and comments at a conference on sensory deprivation were removed from the published version. He was not invited to government sponsored symposia on dolphins(he had refused to help develop them as weapons), though he clearly knew more about them than anyone in the world.

He liked to live and work on the edge and few could keep up with him, as this books make clear. If you have read some of his other books it will be much easier going. He was a pioneer in consciousness research and pushed the boundaries of our understanding of who we are and what we might become. Among other things he catalogs the various states reached by drugs, meditation, and isolation, tries to determine their significance, and suggests how to use them.

As a result of all his research, especially his months of continuous hourly injections of ketamine, he became convinced that our ordinary reality was not the only one. During his trips he was often in communication with members of a civilization 1000 years in the future. We all allow ourselves such experiences every time we watch a scifi movie and sometimes it leaves us more than just amused, but when anyone meditates or takes a drug to do it we tend to discount the results. Lilly however, took it all seriously, and parts of his book explain why. Whatever our mind produces --by any means --only happens because our brains are programmed by our genes to make it possible. So it's at least plausible that any of these routes inward reveal fundamental aspects of what's possible for us in the future, or even for some other species elsewhere in the universe.

If you find his scientifically based viewpoints irrational, consider that most people believe without evidence (really with abundant evidence to the contrary) in good and bad luck, in super beings living in space who rule the earth, in a place in spacetime where dead people go, in stars millions of light years away influencing their lives, and in ghosts, angels, witches, and gods that come to earth to inhabit statues that read our thoughts and violate all the laws of physics, chemistry and biology in order to help us personally.

He describes his tank work (and lots more) in The Dyadic Cyclone, The Center of the Cyclone, and in Programming and Metaprogramming in the Human Biocomputer (1967) and other books and papers.

This and his other books are pleas to examine your beliefs with an open mind.

He defines metabeliefs as those about belief systems. He says that our simulations of reality (with meditation, isolation, drugs, computers) can provide access to other realities which may include the future, the past, or extraterrestrial. He refers to metaprograms as learning tools (symbols, programs, languages, ideas, models) which our central programs (mind or part of it) run all the time. Cognitive psychology did not really exist at the time he was most active and now we would likely call the central programs cognitive templates, modules or inference engines.
He refers to self-metaprograms (or essences) as parts of the mind that program our experiences.

Though he carried out an exhausting and dangerous program of self experimentation with psychedelics (what many now call entheogens), he did not believe they are a final or complete path to higher consciousness.
However, as I reflect on this, I note that tens of millions have successfully explored their cognitive templates with psychedelics while meditation alone may have generated a few hundred thousand satoris and probably less than 1000 mystics of whom we know. It is also clear that psychedelics have led millions to meditation.

He mentions the very psychedelic Revelations of St. John and understands that Jesus taught revelation from within-- ie, the same sort of self transcendence as Taoism and Buddhism. He discusses how we use drugs, sex, money, groups, war etc as substitutes for God. God as compassion, science, consciousness or superspace (the then current concepts of cosmology are explained and he imagines the universe collapsing and being reborn--very contemporary!). He discusses god in here vs god out there but notes that if it's out there then its a puzzle where math comes from. His experiences make him doubt that death is the end.

He was very open to all ideas and his desire to consider all points of view makes some parts of his books rambling and a bit incoherent. He crams so many ideas on each page that there is easily enough in each to form the core of ten books or a lifetime of research and personal exploration. Among the blizzard of mind boggling ideas are: war is the result of a future civilization using us for war games; we are god simulating himself, our interstellar rockets find intelligent machines that follow us back to earth and take over; government sponsored meditation classes, computers that control and monitor all communication and take control of civilization, our genes generate the illusion that we live in a certain and determinate universe; we are simulated by God or vice versa.

Though he must have crossed paths countless times with Indian mystics and Buddhists, strangely, he was most influenced by an obscure American mystic named Franklin Merrell-Wolff--another remarkable figure now almost totally lost in time.

Lilly was an extremely bright and highly rational person yet he became convinced of the reality of his extraterrestrial membership in a future civilization and he went into a 6 week depression after a ketamine trip in which they showed him the collapse of the universe.

It was clear to him that the phenomena of the mind were capable of scientific study but this was quite heretical 40 years ago. What a great pity that he never delved into Wittgenstein's philosophy nor became acquainted with Osho!

Some of his books like "The Scientist" end with reprints of some of his papers and poems.

Someone should put all his writings plus photos and other memorabilia on a DVD!

OF THE BOOKS/AUTHORS WHO MADE ME WHO I AM.....

One of my four most influential authors, I first read of John in an Omni magazine and I do not remember what the story was about. Soon I was drawn to his books on dolphin research and I read every thing that he has written on them. He was the foremost pioneer and one of the best in dolphin research. One of his goals was to communicate with dolphins and he came pretty close but gave it up when he decided man was not ready for that knowledge. The movie "Day of the Dolphin" originates out of his dolphin research and showed how man has taken his research and knowledge, suppressed it to the public, and used it for power and political gain. One of the largest influences on me of the dolphin studies was my understanding that there were intelligent beings on earth either on par with or superior with humanity. Knowing and accepting this has been very influential in my life and how I have grown. I followed along on the rest of John's writings and learned from and was influenced by them as well. His books on spirituality and the world beyond our consciousness have lead me beyond many of the walls placed in front of my mind by our society. The movie "Altered States" originated from Lilly's book "The Center of the Cyclone" which was about his experiences with altered states of the mind. The presence of CCG's, or the Coincidence Control Group, that John met when out of his body has stayed with me since reading of them. For John was told by them that we have control of small scale coincidences but the CCG works with the large scale coincidences. His autobiography is a great overview of all that he has done and leaves me with awe and a desire to see and understand the world beyond what I have been taught.
